I was driving through Athy yesterday and took this. It looked like it was going to be a half decent shot when I was standing there but I’m not so sure now.
Any suggestions what I could have done to improve?

    Thanks,

I like it squ1d. One thing I think takes away from the scene that you have captured is the sun. I thinks its too bright. But on ther other hand that sort of adds to the image so I am not really sure where i stand with it. If the sun was less imposing in where it is present i think the pic wud improve. I cud be very wrong tho.

Very nice. If this was taken in raw i would re process and try to get some detail into the shadow areas.

very nice worth spending some time on. the 6×6 format works well

To improve i would have used a hard grad over the sun (but not have brought it down any further). Would have also taken two exposures on a tripod. One for the top of the pic with the grad in place and one for the bottom and blended them in photoshop failing that would try a hdr version (which i haven’t tried to do myself yet). This is a hard one to expose correctly so i think you did good

Great shot, love the reflections, I would have to agree with everybody else on the sun, sorry.

Thanks for the comments lads. I’ve tried another edit. Fairly basic I’m afraid, not really up on photoshop yet.
Cropped out the sun and had a play with the White Balance.

Beautiful shot, a pity about the sun. The second one is certainly better and it has a nice warm feel to it.

    Coming along nicely there squ1d…

If my memory serves me correctly this is your 3rd image post in the past few days and within this short space of time there are already some improvements. Compositional this is a very good pic.

Again, if my memory serves me correctly you’ve shot into the sun in your past 3 images posts… maybe work on your technique without trying to overcome the sun at such an early stage.

nfl-fan, thanks for the comments. I think you’re on to something there, hadn’t twigged that myself. :)

I think I need to get out of bed earlier too so I have more options!

Thats your best so far squid the lads have already said what has to be said regarding the light so I wont repeat that. but I think from a compositional point of you this is a really strong shot if you shot in raw I bet you could get more detail out it. keep up the good work if you can go from your first post to this in a few days I am looking forward to seeing more from you

I going to be the awkward bastard here and say that I quite like
your first offering in spite of (or possibly because of…) the sun.
Hotspots aren’t always as bad as you may think they are, and the
loss of the one you’ve managed to expose here would make the
reflection on the water and the light on the jetty less convincing than
they actually are. Call it a happy accident if you will, but your original
is by far the better image here in my humble opinion. After all, that
is what you were looking at, isn’t it…?

    Rob.
