MMX Thanks a million – I work on calculations and the green channel to get my black and whites. I must remember that this works well for me in some cases but not all. In my version of the the B & W, the soldiers face is definately too dark and I would have been better off to desaturate the image and increase contrast etc or spend more time getting the channels right. Your version looks much better.
Thanks,
Alice
1. Adobe Photoshop CS5: File > Open As > Camera RAW
2. Recovery > +100 // to make the blown out areas darker
3. Exposure > -0.30 EV // to make the whole photo darker
4. Fill light > +5 // to bring back the dark tones
5. Clarity > +25 // the changes decreased clarity so we need to increase it back a bit
// now we can open the photo in Photoshop itself
6. Use Burn tool with big soft brush (about 150 px) to burn the highlights (3 %) and darken the armor and helmet
7. To keep the contrast, burn also shadows (2 %) on the armor and helmet
8. Use Dodge tool to dodge the highlights (2 %) on face, side of the helmet and scarf
// now we open the photo in the plug-in called Silver Efex Pro which will convert the photo to B&W (I highly recommend it, as well as Color Efex Pro)
9. Increase the structure to +46 %
10. Use orange or red filter to lighten skin tones
11. Apply the changes and flatten the image
12. Do some more dodging and burning to increase the clarity if you want
13. Sharpen the photo (Smart Sharpen > +35 %) and save it
