Front Garden this morning – Canon 60mm Macro

Lovely image John, the droplets are perfectly focused and stand out very well against the deep red backdrop of this rose. I’d say the spider was pretty pissed when he woke up to see them.

Well executed – I need to try some macro shots myself some day.

    Hi john,

very interestning image! Great details. I have actually been looking at the canon 60mm macro, could you tell me how its working out for you? Is it worth choosing this over the sigma 105 or any other macro lense?

    Cheers

    Thanks chaps.

Pete: Canon 60mm is a decent little lens… small, light, well built… and always does a good job for me. Requires that you get in very close to subjects… I was probably a few inches away from the rose above for example… so may not be suitable if you plan on shooting stuff like insects that’ll be bothered by your proximity. Supposedly doubles up well as a portrait lens as well… although I can’t say I’ve ever used it for portraits.

    Thanks again.

    Nice shot John,

i love the droplets on the web and the colours of the rose. I find the blur in the top left corner abit of a shame as thats the first thing I see, but is probably as a result of me looking at this on a small laptop.

    Thanks Peter.

Unfortunatley the blur is par for the course when shooting macro. Because you’re focusing on such a minute area, in this case the droplets in and around the centre, then you’re often limited to a small area of focus. This one was shot at F2.8, I tried a few at F8 but wasn’t as impressed by the results. I’m no macro expert… just a try, fail, adapt and try again sorta person.

I agree, the top left corner is noticeably blurrier than the rest of the image and is sort of distracting once you take notice of it.

    Cheers

Ah but the velvety scatter of droplets on the edge of a petal 2/3 down on right is just gorgeous!
This pic is like a world in miniature. Lovely.

Saw this on flickr, excellent shot, I find I’m instantly drawn to the drops. Blur is inevitable with macro anyway seeing as your very close.
I’m using a Canon 100mm macro and find it has a good working distance, 6 inch minimum focus distance, didn’t scare any bugs on me today :)

OUTSTANDING shot John – the sharpness of the droplets is perfect, and I also like the contrast with the red – a candidate for
    Sep POTM?

    Cheers ladys and gents.

I do have an affection for this one myself… and I think it should win Sep POTM as a representation of the love all us PI members share for one another :D

    Ok… gag!

Very nice, detailed image John. The dof works very well here, as it draws my eye straight to the droplets.
