Dave, I’m afraid there is nothing in this image that really interests me, sorry. Maybe if you had taken a closer shot of some detail of the engine it might catch the eye a bit more.
I’m drawn to subjects like this myself, they are difficult to frame but still make powerful and dramatic shots. I like the detail and the various rust colours. Its not going to win any competitions but is still an interesting shot.
Hi Dave
For me a close crop on a specific area would work but there is a lot going on as regards detail, all of which are interweaved into each other which is distracting to the viewer as there no one part that leads you into the frame.
Shooting down with the sun behind you has left a shadow cutting through the image which again is distracting to the viewer, personaly if i was to try and shoot this maybe i would try a alternate angle with a shallow DOF and add some background(was the sea far away?) and maybe pop a little burst of flash to bring out the detail. Also i would maybe saturate the image more or even a cross processed to see what weird results it will give.
Ok so to recap
(1) Get low down, (2) Closer crop,(3) Add subtle fill in flash,(4) Shallow DOF (5) Use backdrop (Sea) to emphasise its a marine engine.
Dave, by no means am i an expert in this area but the above is just something worth tryin because it does have bags of potential :D
