    http://www.boston.com/business/technology/articles/2008/02/08/polaroid_shutting_2_mass_facilities_laying_off_150/

“Polaroid Corp., the Massachusetts company that gave the world instant film photography, is shutting down its film manufacturing lines in the state and abandoning the technology that made the company famous.”

“Polaroid also makes professional-grade films in Mexico, and its consumer film packs come from a factory in the Netherlands. All these plants are slated for closure this year.”

    Its an absolute tragedy-

Hopefully somebody will pick up Polaroid 55-
its the only one I use-
there are alternatives for others (in 4×5)
    but 55 is absolutely unique-

The demise of the smaller ones is sad too,
but I could never see how they could be sustainable-

There is talk (idle speculation) about Fuji or Ilford picking up 55,
but I’ll believe it when I see it-

It would be great if someone picked up the licenses and continued to make the film.

Here is the latest schedule from Polaroid:-

j, fuji have said no, ilford have met polaroid to discuss this, no word on the outcome of that.

judging by the stories that have emerged the decision to quit the film seems to be heavily influenced by the real estate value of some key manufacturing plants and their desirability as large shopping malls. not being able to compete with film sounds like a nicer excuse.

    I had seen that story-

I suppose the other problem is the supply of Tech Pan,
or whatever it is its made from-

Presumably supplies of that are running out too-

Very sad- probably impossible to understand unless you’ve used it-

a retired kodak film engineer on another site swears its not tech pan.
i’ve always thought it was, he says no.

magic stuff though, 4 boxes left and thats it for me. i wish there was a polaroid building near me so i could throw my technika through their largest pane of glass.

Although I haven’t used polaroid extensively (just view camera last semester really), it’s still sad to see these things go the way of the dinosaurs. I hope ilford picks up production…
