Hi Liam,
You have presented a good selection of photographs here.
They all have a nice athmosphere to them and I think give
feeling of the place where they were taken.I have a few little niggles.
Sometimes I wonder if it is too easy to sit at my computer
and point out “little niggles” I have about photographs.
Is it just being a little picky.
Should I just say “…great photograph…” or some such and
move on.
Then I think, pleasant as it is to get such comments, that this
dosen’t bring much to the table.
So back to saying what I think for what it’s worth.
It’s only an opinion anyway.I have no such niggles about 2,3 and 5.
They are well composed and tell me someting of the place
and it’s people.#1 catches a lovely moment.
I couldn’t help wondering if it were possible to include the top
of the tree and keep the verticals straight.
See, I am being picky but I can’t help it.I really like the way the lines of chairs/tables and arches converge
into the distance.
I do think that maybe you composed a bit tight on the right hand side. That’s an imposing building you have photographed in the last image.
Difficult job to keep everything straight with such a tall structure.
My main “niggle” would be the partial people.I enjoyed looking at these.
Well done.
John.
Liam2673ParticipantJohn,
Thanks for taking the time to give such a detailed reply.
Regard the first, point taken on the tree. I think I mentioned in a comment on one of your own photos that I feel I can get the immediate subject matter right but often get the background wrong. This I guess an example. If i did photoshop, I suppose the tree could be sorted out. Nonetheless i accept that is a flaw in the image. On the other hand, I didn’t want the two ladies to be too small in the image either.
On the seats fading into distance, I include another below that works better in that respect.
On verticals, my photos often fall down because of this. I just need to concentrate more on that aspect and I appreciate you pointing it out.
Again, many thanks for your reply, I’ve included more from Salamanca below. If you ever get the chance, its a fantastic town to visit for a day or two.
5faytheParticipantHi Liam,
That new images you posted are very good as well.
The eye contact in a couple of them add a little extra too. When commenting on photographs we are often not aware of
the exact circumstances that the photographer find themselves in.Your wider shot of the rows of chairs reveals another row which, and
I am guessing now, you may have been trying to exclude when you
composed the first example.I feel that it’s not always possible to get everything technically correct
but often it would be a pity not to take the photo. It is possible to correct certain issues in PS but not always.
I appreciate the dialogue.
Well done.
John.
Liam2673ParticipantDedalusParticipantThey’re a good selection of photographs and would agree with John in relation to the tree and the verticals but this is how we learn.
Don’t know if you considered converting some of them to B&W ( 2, 3 & 4 in the first set and perhaps 4, 5 & 6 in the second ).
I think for me though the best is the chairs in the first set ( No 4 )Liam2673ParticipantThanks for looking Dedalus. interesting you picked out the chairs as your favourite, conventional wisdom would be that an urban image should have a person in it, but I suppose its whatever works. I had thought about B&W, the architecture lends itself to it….plus the fact that in this town there were a lot of elderly people in what I would describe as fairly old-fashioned clothes, it would lend itself to B&W.
DedalusParticipantI think the chairs shot in the first group of images is a nice clean shot and the metal chairs contrast well with the stonework on the ground and in the buildings and there’s a nice geometry to it, also to keep with conventional wisdom, theres a person nicely placed in the far right of the shot… :o)
esthermolineParticipantI’m very happy to see these images of Salamanca here! I’m Spanish myself and I visited Salamanca once a very long time ago and I have very fond memories of it which you’ve rekindled with your photos. I think you did a great job of showing the atmosphere of the place, although some shots of the young students from its famous university would have been good too to give contrast to the scenes with old people. But of course you can’t show everything in a few shots, I really like what you did!
Liam2673ParticipantCHeers for the comments guys. Dedalus, its interesting you picked that shot out also, it wasn’t my own pick of the bunch, but it least it was an easier shot to take than the others and maybe that let me spend more time on it.
Esthermoline, as you know, Salamanca is a wonderfully atmospheric place. It is almost like a disneyland of perfect, ornate sandstone buildings. i took a few photos of young people there, especially young nuns, (which in Ireland, is unusual) I will try to dig them up.
esthermolineParticipantYoung nuns would be very unusual in Spain too!! May be they were Southamerican. Looking forward to seeing those photos!
