Saltees PI trip

Joined Tiny and NFL Fan today on the Saltees. Had a good day with good company, just for the record, I’m not an old man, I’m only 32  Thought NFL was going to need to be airlifted out after being savaged by a Gannet, i think he learned a thing or two about focal lengths, wide angle makes things look far away when they are really quite close!!!! :)

    Nice work John!

This answers my question as I was wondering if the puffins are in yet :-)

Great stuff, all the birds I want to see :) if I had to pick a favourite the second one for
the aaa factor, but love the puffins, must see them this year.

Really great shots.. was talking to Tiny there now yesterday alright when ye were out there.. ye had a nice day and got some savage shots there now as well.. well done …. though you were saying it was a bit early to go out to the Islands… what do you think is the best time of the year to get out there for a visit ?

    Alright John,

Good set there, the Razorbill in flight is especially impressive. Grrr… I don’t recall seeing that Puffin with the mouthful of munchies, very good.

I only processed about 4 last night, the sunburn was at me.

I just realized now why I thought you were an old man before I met you… you post up loads of shots everyday of rare birds and my initial impression was “well, if he took these today/yesterday (as stated in your posts) he mustn’t have been working, so must be retired or something with plenty of time on his hands”… now I know you spend most of your working day in the company of our feathered friends.

Merv – Only about a dozen Puffins on the island that I seen yesterday, loads of everything else. I think mid-late June is when the large numbers can be found, although they are known to be in decline in general.

    Good stuff John.

Remember the time you thought i was going to fall to my death and you had to move cos you couldn’t watch. The Puffin was under the cliff :) . Hows the hand?

Depends what you want, they are mating now and you can get stuff now that you won’t get in a couple of weeks, but i suppose the best time is the 2nd -3rd week in June, there will be loads of chicks to feed then.

They are there but i think most of them are under ground on eggs, I’d expect to see alot more in a couple of weeks.

I love that shot for the same reason, but i would like to gotten some of the ground in the shot. I used a very long focal lenght to isolate them from the thousands of other birds, if i stapped back any further i was in the sea :)

    Hey John,

Mike here, from yesterday’s trip… said I’d sign up for the site this morning :) Great snaps there from the island… somebody had a busy night. The puffin with the sand-eels is savage. Niall’s processing like a lunatic here at the moment… expect some more pics posted up soon, I’d imagine :D

    Chat later,

    Mike.

    Hi John,

You have a great set of shots, there. The shot of the puffin with the “mouthful of munchies” was definitely worth standing ridiculously close to the edge of that cliff to get… however.. i could never have done it… when you were coming back to where i was sitting, i was sure you were going to slip and up playing with the seals as the end of the cliff… but dont worry.. i would have tried to save your camera :-)

And that i love that you got the shot of the Black Backed gull on the nest, its nice to be able to put a face to that nest!!

    Hi John,

You certainly had a very productive photographic day.
This is a lovely set of images.

I’m disappointed you didn’t look after our John better
though letting him get attacked by a bird and not making
sure the factor had been applied.

    Well done.

    John.

All great shots John. If I had to choose it is definitely #3 of the Gannets on the nests and #4 the Puffin with a mouthfull of Sand Eels………Mikka

Agreed with the above comments on the flying razorbill and the puffin with fish in its bill. Very cool.
