Saltees trip Sunday 20th June (new title)

MickSParticipant
Hi Jenny,
I’ll be bringing my 70-200mm lens with 1.4 extender, my 17-40mm, some lunch and most importantly… Steelydan!
If the weather is good then Sunscreen is absolutely ESSENTIAL!
I tend to travel light at the best of times anyway but as John mentioned, its quite a trek from one side of the island to the other so too much gear will just weigh you down. And unless your lens is very long and heavy I wouldn’t even bring a monopod/tripod as you won’t need it. (Unless of course you want to take some long exposures with filters etc…)

You may get your feet wet in getting from boat to land so wear appropriate footwear.
There may be other intending passengers so some of you may have to wait for the next sailing. I don’t think it’s possible to book your passage.
Thanks Pixelle, I am bringing a pair of crocs (rubber shoes) to get from the boat to shore, just roll up the trousers
and hope for the best :) Have my hiking boots for on land, should be ok. And I think we have a boat to ourselves as
we are 12 in number and thats all the boat will take, I did originally book for ten but changed it to full boat, not that
it matters we are all going to the same place :)Sorry you wont be joining us, hope your walk goes well!
Thanks for that John, never even thought of a flash! my longest lens is the 50-500 Sigma and it is very heavy doubt
if I would manage that on a monopod, might bring the beany cushion though I seem to get on alright with that if I
have something to rest it on…a rock or the ground will do.And Mick, I doubt if I will be doing long exposures, not with my collection of filters anyway, I have a 70-200 2.8 and a
2x extender, would that be better than the Bigma? I know it wouldnt give me the same reach as the
Bigma, but near as damn it, and it is a little bit lighter (but not much)MickSParticipantHi Jenny,
My 70-200 is only the f4 version and with the 1.4x my autofocus still works perfectly, but I’m not sure if the autofocus works on the 2.8 when you attach an extender. You’ll definately need autofocus, especially for the birds in flight shots so if you go with that combo just make sure you’ve got autofocus.
I’ve been over there with a few guys that were using the 50-500 without monopods and they got great shots. I guess it’s up to you at the end of the day and which set-up you prefer, personally if I had your gear, I’d go with the Bigma but thats just my 2 cents.shutterbugParticipantCheers Mick, I probably will bring it, I find it more reliable than the other one, probably
because I use it more and am just used to it.Roll on Sunday :D
JMac-2006Participantreally looking forward to this – probably should share some phone numbers before then – though it’ll probably be hard to miss a bunch of PI’ers on the quay :)
shutterbugParticipantPI camera straps on parade :) I will put a big sign on my car and
we can meet there :)

Have a great day tomorrow. Looks like the weather is going to be good for you this trip. EnjoyshutterbugParticipantThanks miki am sooooooooo excited, I dont think a hurricane will stop me this year!
ps….not that there will be one of course, calm seas, calm seas, :)
photomanMemberHope you all have a great day tomorrow. I was there on Friday and it’s such a wonerfull site to see all the birds. Don’t forget the long pants and boots as there are some nettles about. Also some water, sun hats etc and a long lens if you are up to carrying it.

MarkKeymastersteelydanParticipantThere was a group Pic Mark and lots of red faces and arms.
Nice meeting you all guys, a great day out and although we did not get the puffins ( thanks to the stupid foreigners ,that were sitting on the burrows shooting the hell out of one solitary puffin) we had a great day at the Gannets and the Black Backed Gulls chicks, all rounded off by soem Dolphins that were swimming by the Great Saltee.
Roll on the next trip..Maybe the puffins are late this year…very scarce and very worrying. They think the sandeel’s are declining and the puffin chicks can not digest the sprats.
mervifwdcParticipantHi John,
You mean the guys that flew all the way from spain to shoot puffins, and ended up shooting Pidgeons?
JMac-2006ParticipantGreat day, the Saltees are well worth the visit. We couldn’t ask for better weather even if my arms and neck are red from the sunburn, it was great to meet a few more people from PI really nice bunch, look forward to the next outing. Will put up a few pics of the 2-3 puffins we did see just before we headed back to the boat.
