In my opinion both pictures need some edition. The first is little bit dark and the colours on the second one are “grey”.
The sky on both pictures is flat.
The B&W one loses too much detail in the shadow areas, it’s the detail in the grass that makes the photo.
The colour one just lacks a bit of colour for some reason, looks a bit flat:
Sandwiching: taking two images and layering them in an image editor – so much easier than trying to line up two transparancies by hand in the olden days.
If you convert the colour to B&W in Photoshop you can use it to bring some detail out of the shadows, add contrast and make things a bit punchier. I faffed, to give you a rough idea, hope you don’t mind.
