I did my first proper set up on the Elinchrom D-Lite 2 kit that I bought a while back. For these 2 shots I just used a single light set up with the larger of the 2 softboxes attached. Positioned at about 45 degrees to her left, above her and angled down.

I don’t have a light meter yet, so basically had to shoot, check the histogram and adjust accordingly until I got something I was relatively happy with.

I’m still at the early learning stage with the lights, so would appreciate any comments, good bad or indifferent.

I was also playing around with different processing methods. Both of these were given an initial run through Lightroom then touched up in Photoshop.

I found the medium blue backdrop to be quite handy and easy to select and play with afterwards.

Nice enough poses. The girl looks relaxed and at ease. Thats good, it shows you have a good rapport with her.

#1 Definitely the stronger of the two. The face looks a tad hot. There is a dark shadow below her chin. You could use a reflector to avoid such a contrast. The colour looks to be off slightly too. Probably introduced in the PP. Did you do any noise reduction on it? Maybe could do with some.

#2 Her face is way too hot and is loosing detail. There is a colour cast toward magenta. Again probably due to PP. Get her to look at the camera. It always looks better. Again a reflector in this would come handy. Also you could stand her a bit further from the background.

All in all a nice couple of photos. You are on the right track with these.

    Hope this helps.

Thanks for the comments oshead. Plenty to be getting on with there.

The girl is my daughter..so I’d hope to have a good rapport with her.. ;-) Of course that isn’t always the case with Father/Daughter/Son combinations. ;-)

I thought these shots looked a little blown on my work screen, but again, as in previous posts, they aren’t as bad as they seem here. There is detail in even the hottest looking parts of the skin, even in the second shot here, so I can retrieve it from the RAW if I need to. I was trying to go for a high contrast look in all of the shots I did and maybe pushed it a little too far.

I’m not sue I can see a magenta cast, but again, that could be down to monitors. I used a lightroom preset, which I tweaked, on the first one, so the colours are anything but natural.

The second is much nearer the actual real colours present. But both have been pushed a little, so I wouldn’t stand over any of the colours as being “au naturale” ;-)

Thanks again for the comments. Much appreciated.

    Good pictures Robbie.

I like the poses, the second really shows her eye colour, which is lovely, and,
I like that she isn’t looking into the camera, something quite teenagerish about that.
It does look to be a tad soft though…

Good eye contact in the first, really sweet expression, I can just imagine you telling
her some goofy tale to make her smile…
There is a bit of a cast to it though…

When i looked at these earlier I thought you’d done some cross-processing on them – you know the whole “seniors” style portraits – so they work quite well to me with that in mind !

I like the first best – i really like her expression (she’s the head of ye btw) I’d prefer the composition of the second – but her eyes are aimed a tad high in that one .. so as usual I want a combination of the two :)

Cheers Lo..as usual you’re not far off.

I used a Lightroom preset, at least on the first, that was posted here by Jay a long time ago and used on his Cuba pics. It’s one I particular like to use now and again. Although usually, as in this case, I tend to tone it down a lot and fiddle with the settings. Be very boring if I just used it straight out of the box as is ;-)

As for the pose and composition, I took a lot of different shots, so I probably do have one the way you described :-)

    Thanks again Lo….
