Hiya Mort
Your first shot works best for me .. I would like to see a closer “portrait” crop but I like the rich colours .. and I really like the fact he’s looking down at the pipe (others will say that eye contact is lacking in the shot – prepare yourself ;) )
Second shot – lovely conversion and a good n’sharp image .. but I don’t feel the fact that both subjects have their backs to the viewer helps the shot

wjklewisMemberHi Mort
Love the second shot the conversion and lighting are great. I agree with lorraine, Its a pity that the man behind the bar wasnt turned around. The detail is great.
Good work JohnmortParticipantThanks guys. I’m not normally one for the backs of peoples heads but I hadn’t been out shooting street in a few weeks and wasn’t feeling particularly brave
RobMemberActually I have to say I really like this. It doesn’t bother me at
all that I can’t see either face. Terrific exposure and conversion.
Great moody street scene. Nice work.Rob.
mymodelshootsParticipantI really like the second one. Great conversion, great composition. Love the lighting across the customer’s back.
The first one I wish you had gotten a bit lower, but then perhaps you would have been spotted, which may be why it was taken from eye level :)
GrahamBParticipantI agree with mymodelshoots on the first one.
Getting down low would have dramatically changed the shot.
On the second one though, I totallt disagree with the faces arguement.
I think the shot is great the way it is. Really nice composition and the conversion is great.brookiedParticipant2nd shot is the one for me, fantastic capture, its making me think is he reading a paper? is he eating a burger? we shall never know and thats the beatuy for me. Great B&W conversion also, well done.
RodcunhaParticipantI would have to preffer the 1st one here, it’s a great capture that portraits very well the solitude too many times associated with ageing.
The second one I think it would have been much better if the employee was facing the camera and interacting with the custumer on the counter.
Cheers,
Rod
ciaranParticipantI really like them both, but the second one would be top of the list for me. There’s really been a huge increase in street shots lately… enough for a self published book I think ;)
Great shots and for the second, I’m glad it’s the back of someones head. I can’t put my finger on why, but I think it works really well.
mortParticipantThanks all for the feedback. I do agree about the low angle on the first one – pity I can’t go back and reshoot it :D
With the second one, I knew when I was taking it I was breaking a golden rule of street photography (not to shoot the backs of peoples heads) but also liked it enough to do something with it. I guess I like the movie scene feel to it and sometimes tones and feel alone are enough for me to enjoy a photo.
I like the book idea Ciaran!
