Day107_365 My Little Girl…… by MannysPhotography, on Flickr
My daughter Savanna is growing up right before my eyes. I took a shot of her when she was 8 playing a guitar that was lost in a computer crash…. This shot reminded me of that photo.

No processing here, SOOC and fill flash..Jonnyp16vParticipantI really like the first shot. As for the second shot, I’m not sure the fill flash and the dark background work imo. Maybe if you brightened the background a bit or toned down the highlights, so it’s not as obvious that the flash was used, other than that it’s a nice shot. I’m not a fan of flash, so I might be focusing on it because of that.
Keep the good work comin.
5faytheParticipantHi MannyC,
I like both these photographs and being of your daughter they will be even more special for you.
The style #1 reminds me of some album covers from years ago and it is very nice.
The fact that it emulates a lost photograph is good and I suppose it is a salutary
lesson of the vulnerability of our digital files if our backup and storage systems are
not up to scratch.#2 is very nice but I instantly felt that the subject was place a little too centrally.
I also felt that the way she is looking out of the frame creates a little disconnect from the viewer.I do not use flash very much so know little about it.
I do feel, like Jonny, that it is obvious here and I’m not sure that is a good thing.
I prefer natural light and reflectors if needed but that’s only my biassed opinion. :)As always these are just person observations and meant to help rather than criticise.
Cheers,
John.
bigalguitarpickerParticipantAs a Strat player I’m all in favour of Savanna’s choice of guitar, which looks really good in your photo. Savanna looks OK too! I think Savanna can play a bit too, as she appears to be holding down an Am chord. Not too sure about the thumb on string 6, fret 1!
Second image is, in my opinion simply superb. The combination of chosen aperture and fill flash has given a beautiful separation of subject from background, with beautiful lighting of the subject – no burnout anywhere. May I ask if this is a genuine outdoor capture, or has Savanna been extracted from a studio shot and placed on a separately captured background? Looks good to me anyhow. I think the yellow bloom in her hair, in conjunction with the yellow blooms at bottom left and the tress of hair across her mouth, creates a pleasing diagonal element and hints at a Fibonacci (sp?) composition.SodafarlMemberMy daughter Savanna is growing up right before my eyes.
