Flatbeds are ok for contact sheets but a dedicated 35mm scanner pulls out much more of the fine detail. I have a Nikon V ED in the corner of my office that I haven’t used in over a year.

Ok great … if you are not using it, just give me your address and I’ll pop over and pick it up any time :-)

Seriously though, that’s a very good film scanner and something like that is always going to outperform a flatbed all right. My question was really if the cheaper dedicated film scanners (e.g. Plustek) are better than a good quality flatbed like an Epson V500. I have done a bit of digging around on the web and the consensus seems to be that you are better off with a good flatbed than a cheap Plustek …..

Could be! I scan MF negatives on a flatbed and they are fine up to A3+ (which is as big as I’ve ever needed). You can always have them drum scanned if you need more. I had a cheapo 35mm scanner and took it back within a day and forked out for the Nikon V ED. Saying that, as I never use it, I’d swap it for a V750 in a heartbeat :) or trade for anything decent Nikon or MF related.

Hmnnn … I have a Bronica SQAI 6×6 kit that is superfluous to my requirements (with really good 110m macro lens and a couple of film backs etc) ….. any interest?

Epson Perfection 3490 PHOTO is what I’m using. It’s OK but my previous one, the 4490 (I think) was better. The negative carrier on it carried 2 rows of 6 negs, whereas the 3490 carries one row and you have to turn it round as it scans 4 in one direction and then the remaining two in the opposite direction. The 3490 was about £75. I had installed a roll in/roll out shelf for my scanner to try and save a bit of desk space. When I tried it, it rolled in and hit the stops. The scanner kept on going and slid off the back edge of the shelf and fell about 15″ on to the tiled floor. Goodbye scanner. I replaced it with the cheaper 3490. Scans are fine, but I’m hoping to upgrade to something that will scan medium format negs. I’ve never had any luck trying to scan negs on a flatbed scanner, the Epsons I’m familiar with have a removable cover inside the lid and a backlight to illuminate the neg.
    Hope this helps, Alex.
