Has anyone any advice on a scanner for 120 size film ?
I want to get one of these as it is costing me approx €9 per roll
to get scanned at the local lab.I was looking at the Canon CanoScan 8800F & either of these Epson Perfection V700 Photo/V750 Pro
any others to consider ?
like http://www.plustek.de/uk/product/7500i_ai.php
thanks in advance

MartinParticipantI have the V700, great scanner, even with just the basic Epson software that comes with it.
I have taken the little legs off the film holders so that the film is closer to the glass. When the film is in the holder then i try to pull it tight so as to make it as flat as possible in the holder, get great scans from it then….
Would have no problem recommending it…

aoluainParticipantMartin,
Thanks for that, erm sounds good but the price is WWWWAAAAAAAYYYYYYYY out of my budget.
I was also looking at the Nikon coolscan 9000 and that is just off the wall.
I need to cut the cloth and maybe go for the Canon, can get one through
work for €200 pus the vat!anybody using the canon 8800F ?
MarkKeymasterI have a V500 (have used the V700 also) and love it. Key diff between the two are: 1) slightly lower dmax on the V500
2) It only does up to MF sized unlike the V700 which goes up to 10×8.macredeyeParticipantOh, I’ll keep a close eye on this thread. I’m on the market for a MF scanner. The Canon lide 700f has a whopping 9600 dpi, but it’s 35mm only.
aoluainParticipantWelcome to the forum Cliff!
Thanks Mark, I just cannot stretch €500 for the top end Epsons.
I was reading up some reviews on the canon 8800 and the epson
4490 produces better quality scans . . . and works out about €50
cheaper, Im now swaying towards the 4490!ExpresbroParticipantAgain, like Mark and I know Martin (Tokyo) as well, I have recently bought the V500. I haven’t used it much yet, but seems pretty powerful for the price. Am also looking at a third party film neg holder as the one that comes with it is pretty flimsy, but then I think they all pretty much are.

ExpresbroParticipantaoluainParticipantA bit of clarification from Mark has me looking at the
V500 now.its a toss up between that and the 4490 which works out cheaper
by about €40.what are pixmania like to deal with?
ExpresbroParticipantI bought mine from Pixmania Alan and didn’t have any problems. It arrived relatively quickly, despite getting a worrying email stating it was out of stock, even though it showed as “In Stock” at the time of ordering. I was worried because I’d read a lot of negative posts about their delivery times…but it arrived despite my worries in one piece, and they were about the cheapest online.
You could of course pick it up locally and maybe with the changing financial climate you might even get it closer to the online price.
R
aoluainParticipantyea I can get it from one of our suppliers at work here
and works out after the usual company nominal margin
for staff works out about €30 more expensive, not much i suppose.I was comparing both the 4490 and v500, ok the resolution
is 4800 and 6400 respectively.yea its probably going to be the v500 !
will probably get it through work here too, guys thanks for the heads up.
JMac-2006ParticipantI just posted a question in film photo area – sounds like you have same predicament – what is fastest solution – dont think he wants to spend a lot of money though
My Dad is looking to digitize all 20-30 years worth of archived negatives, news photographer so talking thousands of negs – he has a negative scanner but it is fierce slow – 3 negatives takes half hour – is there a better solution or where is the best place to go to get a faster unit?
edit – its 35mm black and white and colour he needs to scan if that makes an difference to the choice
Thanks
aoluainParticipantHi Jason,
I finally went for the Epson V500, should have updated the thread.
The V500 is pretty capable though im still tricking around with it.
It will scan 2 x 120 frames or 12 x 35mm. As martin mentioned in you question
on the other section it can take up to 10 minutes per scan.Of course it depends on what resolution he wants etc etc.
I would guess if you spend more on the big brother the V700 it would be quicker
at scanning.Alan

Martin , I have the Canon 8800F , it’s fabulous on Medium Format scanning so far , but I still have to get into all the niceties which I intend to do over the weekend . ( It scans 35mm well too ! ) . And it’s fast as well .
You’re welcome to try it if you’re down here Kilkenny way anytime .
Michael .
