Scanning help

Having a little trouble film scanning recently, mainly negatives with open skies and also a problem keeping negatives flat, really need to go back to basics, anyone tried sandwitching between glass for scanning instead of plastic film holders. Any suggestions ?

Here is one that worked out,

    it depends on the scanner

but some scanners do whats called fluid mounting

where you put oil on the glass then oil on another piece of glass, and sandwich the image between them

its how movies are done, called wet gate scans. in stills its called fluid mounts

    Good picture Eddie-
it sits well in the square-

I assume you’re talking about a flatbed scanner?
    I can’t really help,
but I have found this on ebay-

    http://cgi.ebay.ie/10-x-Mittelformatscan-4-5×6-oder-6×6-mit-Nikon-9000_W0QQitemZ360033544914QQihZ023QQcategoryZ29737QQcmdZViewItemQQ_trksidZp1742.m153.l1262

    I haven’t used them, so I can’t recommend them,
but they seem cheap enough to risk a few bob-

And that scanner is very close to being as good as you can get for 120-

I dont have anything magic to suggest for keeping negatives flat in the holder but I do put negatives I want to scan under some books a few days before I scan and it seems to improve this curling.

I’ve seen these custom holders recommended before:

I thought, I would put in my fresh experience with the betterscanning film holder. I have bought it, together with a glass piece for about €90 with shipping, which seems a lot, but it’s actually not bad, if you consider that your cheap scanner will produce much better files. I have just finished calibrating the height and rescanned a few frames shot on Ilford Pan 50. The step up in contrast and sharpness is pretty noticeable, the holder keeps the film much more flat and it is much-much more robust than the stock holder that comes with the Epson v700. Of course, I paid a lot, so I have no other choice than praising it….
… I have just started shooting film really, so please ignore all the above and take it as rumour from the internet.

    Can’t help…
Only to buy Nikon 9000ed or 8000ed to instead your scanner to scan the medium size film…
It’s the big problem for all the epson scanners, can’t focusing correctly.
If you put the film on the glass directly, the newtonian rings will appearing.
Nikon coolscan VED is a really good scanner to scan 135 film, but can’t scan medium size film.
