Scanning Negatives
-
brianciaranParticipant
A close family member has recently passed away and I have found a lot of negatives from the 1930’s right up to the 90’s. I would like to convert these to digital images and wonder is there a decent Scanner that can be purchased that would do this job? Have any of you done this and what has been your experience? I’d like the Scanner to be able to accommodate various sizes of negs because thats what i have, whats out there and how much should i expect to pay for something decent?. I also have a lot of slides myself and would like to convert these as well. Your thoughts and opinions?
Many Thanks,
Brian
MarkKeymasterHi Brian,
Sorry for your loss !. Regarding the negatives, what size(s) are they?
Thanks
MarkbrianciaranParticipantThanks for your comments Mike, I need to check that, i will revert but basically I don’t want to be confined to something that will only scan a specific size of negative if at all possible, will check over next couple of days and reply, thanks again
MarkKeymasterTake a look at the Espon range, V500, V700, V750 (there might be another relatively new model as well…).
The V500 will only handle 35mm, 120mm and slides whereas the others will go up to 8×10.Of course all these scanners are quite expensive so if you don’t have many to scan you might want to see if you can find
a service which will scan for you. Then again a scanner can also be sold off after you’ve used it.brianciaranParticipantMany Thanks for the information Mike, I will check into that.
The Negatives measure 3 1/4 by 2 1/4 inches, most date from the 1930’s/40’s. I am providing the dimension in inches as from my knowledge we wern’t working in metric until the early 70’s right? The dimensions I have provided are the image size of the negative, not the size as cut, these were fairly crudely cut back in those times when there was no equipment to perform that exercise!!!
After reading this now, are your comments re: Epson still relevant?
Thanks
brianciaranParticipantMarkKeymasterCheck out the Epson V500 – it will scan 120 film which perhaps is what that is. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Film_format” onclick=”window.open(this.href);return false;
I’d imagine that they are 2.25inch high and then due to the cut that the width is variable which would be fine.Mike or Mark – I’ve had worse ;)
