Scanning without a scanner…

After jb’s comment on another thread, I took a softbox, a flash, made a mount from printer paper for my first medium format negative and took a photo of it with my d200. It’s pretty primitive, but I kinda like the paper’s texture behind the photo. Anyone has a better solution, like using a light table or something?

    And another one…

If you have a lightbox, (a clean one) that would be the obvious thing to use…
just be sure to mask off everything except the image-

The first one looks a little bit unevenly lit-
    its a little bit difficult to see the effect of the flash before you take a picture;
perhaps a few under-exposures without the film in place would make the evenness easier to see-
making sure to manually focus on the image plane you’ll be using-

Using a white paper mount will contribute to flare, and reduce contrast-
and also make it more difficult to keep the film flat…

There has to be some distance between the light source and the film,
so that the texture of the paper doesn’t show-

And light bouncing around the room will also adversely contribute to the exposure-
making exposure with a small lamp more controllable than a flash-

It does work, its just another photographic exercise-
you just have to eliminate everything that isn’t helping…
but its no substitute for a good scan, obviously…

Thanks for the tips, JB. This is definitely fun, and even if these are not really good technically, I like them. They look like pinhole images from the nineteenth century.

The negative itself is not fantastic, I have no measuring column, so I just guessed about the quantities when I mixed up the chemicals… film photography is really a lot of fun if you don’t take it too seriously.

I am thinking about buying a scanner though..

Definitely like something from the 19th century. Really interesting to see someone try something
which I think is totally different.

Would be interesting to see a photo of the setup as is or when you’ve perfected it, assuming you’re
    going to keep trying :)
