Scoop Advice Needed

BertieWoosterParticipant
“Scoop” is maybe too strong a word, but I couldn’t think of anything better offhand.
I think I’m in a position to get a fairly unique photo but don’t know how to market it or to do that fast enough.
The Dublin Port tunnel opens this week. The office in East Point Business Park where I work is optimally positioned so that photos taken from the 3rd floor/roof have a great angle on both the exit of the tunnel and the toll booths. As an employee of the company I will have exclusive access to the location for the shots. Neighbouring offices aren’t as well positioned, and really the only better perspective would be from a helicopter.
I think that a few newspapers, and perhaps other media, may be interested in the photos if I could get them to the right people quickly enough. And the photos may be worth a few euros. I’m not out to make a killing but would like the buzz of getting published and getting a few euros for a photo or two.
But I really don’t know who to contact or how to go about it. Can anyone advise?
Thanks in advance.

BertieWoosterParticipantCan anyone help me out with this one? Tomorrow’s the day.
Thanks in advance.
BertieMarkKeymasterBertie,
Might be worth getting in touch with Paddy Barker. I think that not only has Barker Photographic but works
for the Irish Examiner in a senior photography role. He might be able to give you some advise ?Mark
GCPParticipantNigel,

stcstcMemberBertieWoosterParticipantHi Everyone
Thanks for the help – both here and by email. I contacted a number of papers but absolutely nobody showed any interest. So my scoop really turned out to be a damp squib in the end! I think that there’s a lesson to be learned in marketing these things as early as possible, so that papers aren’t already committed to their own staff covering the event.
Anyway, thanks again…

DerekLavertyParticipantWell Bertie, my advice would be not to be too disheartened by the outcome. I have had the same experience on a number of occasions. During the summer I was staying near a seaside town when a large filling station went on fire. There was lots of fire engines and personel there. I took a lot of photographs and emailed them along with a short editorial to every major and local paper in the north. I got one email reply from the photo editor of one paper and another used the images for a front page story. The paper that did use the images rang and said they were going to use them and that a payment was on its way to me. That was june. Surprise it never arrived. This has not put me off and i still regularly send images to most of the well known papers in the north. Some get published and some not.
Moral of the story is never give up, just keep plugging away……
Good luck for your next exclusive……………
Derek………
ThorstenMemberThe press will always give preference to their staffers first, then to agencies they are signed up with and then to freelancers that are NUJ members and finally to citizen-joe if nobody else has the shot. The opportunities for getting published now are much less than they used to be a few years ago and on top of that you need to be really quick off the mark to get your images in before anyone else and they need to be properly (IPTC) captioned if you are to stand any chance of being published. The more you try, the more you increase your chances of getting published – but it’s not an aspect of photography that I would fancy doing for a living (not that anyone suggested they want to make a career of it).
