Secondhand Digital SLR for a 16 Year Old

I am buying a Digital SLR as a Christmas present for my 16 year old daughter. She has been using digital compacts for the last few years and has acquired an interest in photography. While my budget cannot really stretch to a new Canon 350D Rebel XT (my baby!) or an equivalent Nikon or Olympus, I was considering buying a good second hand model with auto and manual options. A reputable camera dealer here in Dublin has a reboxed demo Nikon D50 & 18-55mm AF-S G DX with 3 months warranty for ?490. I can probably extend the budget to this! I know the lens is pretty basic and gets mixed reviews, but, the camera itself looks the real biz.

Try the Canon ebay store – why go Nikon if you are Canon? This way you can share lenses, but otherwise you will have 2 incompatible systems in the house? Or maybe that is the plan…. :twisted: ? :lol:

Hello and welcome to PI. My daughter is only 15 months but she’d got the latest fisher price camera already :lol:
The deal you are offered is quite good but I’m wondering if it would be better if you both were Canon users so hand-me-downs would be possible. With a bit of research you could get a 350d within your budget buying online. Perhaps if you know someone with a UK address you could try the UK Canon Outlet on Ebay
