see how sharp my lens is…

In the park yesterday evening I sat beside an elderly gentleman who turned out to be interested in digital cameras.

    We took a picture…

I usually like colour pictures more and hardly ever convert to B&W, but thought B&W worked best here. Maybe not much more photographic merit than a “see how sharp my lens is” type of shot, but I quite liked his relaxed and happy expression.

Oh, it was taken with a 20D, Large Fine jpeg mode, 1/200 sec at f4 on a Canon 50mm f1.8 lens, manual, partial metering, Daylight white balance. Only minor cropping.

Wow, that’s some shot. Love the really tight crop on it.

He’s got a great set of gnashers, lol. He reminds me of someone I know of the same ‘vintage’ ……always wears a jacket and tie, and would rarely be seen in public without it. I often wonder what they think about scruffs like me……yes I wear a suit to work, but at weekends I am very much a jeans and polo-shirt man.

Great expression and looks good in b&w.
    I would crop the tie.

So natural. The conversion works very well for this shot. I love the portraits you have shared here. Class work!

Please don’t crop the tie! It brings so much to the photo!

Brandyman – I know exactly what you mean about gentlemen of this age group and their propensity for jackets/ties. Standards must have been higher when they were young. People born maybe 10-20 years later seem to favour shell suits rather than business suits! I definitely fall into the scruff category myself!

Roberto/Steve – Agree with Steve on this one. I like the idea of providing a few clues about the person’s personality where possible and feel the jacket and tie do so in this case.
