I appreciate my idea to you a mannequin may sound odd, I simply reviewed lighting test experience in Google and identified that quite a few sources promoted the methodology as a learning technique. http://rickasnoff.com/archives/770″ onclick=”window.open(this.href);return false; to name but only 1.
Not overly odd to me, and at least if you’re sorting out your lighting ahead of shooting a subject, you’re on track, as no one wants to hang around when a photographer is either faffing or trying to figure out lighting or something technical. Best to do all that ahead of time, and the mannequin or something similar as a tool to do so, is a good idea. I would only distinguish that lighting is merely one component of shooting portraits, and for me not even the main one, as when you add a person to the equation, it makes it a whole other kettle of fish, and when the magic happens, imo :) The end goal is shooting the best pictures of people you can, so once you don’t forget that, doing your lighting homework ahead of time, no matter in what unusual way, can only be a good idea :)
