Selective colouring in a photo

I did a F.H.C. shoot last weekend and just for the heck of it did one with selective coloring of the little girl’s bouquet as it was red and the rest in black and white. Now the client i.e the mother loves it. Its nice but it was the thing a few years ago but has it gone out of fashion? Do any of you use selective colouring or do you all hate it now as its so out of date?

I would be interested to here your views so lets discuss….

Personally not something I like, I find a it a tad tacky. But each to their own etc.

I don’t really like it, but it works very well with some subjects. It always reminds me of the movie Schindlers list with the girl in the red coat. While I don’t think it’s use was necessary, it did emphasise the subject.

    Hi Helen,

I think it’s a personal choice. If you like it, why not. I thought it was cool when I first started using software.

When work is for a client it’s really what they like and are willing to pay for that counts.

    All the best,

    John.

Got to agree, its a personal thing,
I don’t do it that often, but sometimes I do a bit of it where I mask in the b/w at a low opacity to deemphasize/desaturate a background , like here

Another in the really don’t like it camp. My own personal thoughts would not be not to rely on processing that is gimmicky or otherwise a crutch to an image, as once that crutch is removed when fashion changes, the image that depends on it collapses.
