Self Portrait

dave100Participant
Finally cleared out my spare room to make some space for off camera flash practice and experimentation..Never tried self portraits before – it’s not easy to keep a straight face
PeteTheBlokeMemberWho wants to see a straight face?
This looks quite dark on my monitor but I can’t seem to get 16 shades down the bottom
of this screen either. I wonder if there’s more blank space than you really need?dave100ParticipantI have cropped a little off the left Pete and left some space on the right in the direction I’m facing. Is this version a bit lighter on your screen?
lousyParticipantPD_BARBSParticipantThe cropped version works better, but as Pete already said, it is abit dark around the face, seeing some more detail on the right would have added to it.

what set up did you use for off camera flash – looks like main light is high and a bit behind you ? which i am guessing is reason your face is a little dark as the guys said – but ten out of ten for bravery putting a self portrait up for critique :) – tried this myself but thought i’d spare you all the results.
dave100ParticipantThanks for the feedback gents –
Yes flash was set camera left behind me high on a stand 1/4 but not snooted – could probably done with some lighting from the right hand side too as it is a little dark around the face. I’ll need to give this a shot keeping a similar result overall. Got to keep practicing –
A brave move in some respects putting up a self portrait JMac but I guess it is what it is and I had nobody else that would pose for me so I bit the bullet and gave it a go.
JMac-2006Participantwhat about a reflector to your front left (camera right) to bounce some light back?
funny i rarely get to practice on a person – my gang run for the hills every time i take the camera out in the house.
dave100ParticipantSounds like the perfect solution Jason –
Didn’t even think of that which will give you my experience in off camera flash lighting. Shouldn’t break the bank to get one –
Thanks for the advice.
