Setting Up A Dublin Street Photography Group

    Hi all
There are a few Dublin street photographers on here, and I was wondering if anyone is interested in forming a group dedicated to it. I have been thinking about this for a while, as I don’t believe there is any such group working in Dublin. It is a great city, but its very difficult to get good street shots here, probably because we don’t have a culture of it in any true historical sense. I myself find that I too often try and take a Continental approach to it, which I think may be silly as we don’t have such an outdoor culture, nor are the Irish as relaxed in front of a lens. I feel that there must be an approach that can define this city in a way it deserves. And this is what I would like such a group to try and achieve.
So, with that said, below is an outline of how I/we might go about it:

1.Have a first meeting with interested parties and decide a name, a “manifesto”, create a structure (chairperson, treasurer etc – much like camera clubs are set up).

    2. Agree on ground rules (how we treat the public, deal with conflict, how we handle the vulnerable, etc).

    3. Then, have days where we meet up in Dublin, carve up the city among us and out we go. And (this is not the only reason I want to do this, honest), pints afterwards and discussions for those inclined.

    4. Build a website, work together to arrange exhibitions, and generally publicise our work.

Given the nature of the type of photography and the time it will probably take up for those eventually involved, I imagine that this will eventually be a small group at first, but that will be fine. It will be easier to set up.

Anyway, any takers can reply here and keep watch for developments, and then turn up for the meeting, where ever it is, and then take it from there. You can also PM me if you want.

And pilipoff and covey, if you are still checking in, I would very much like to see you involved. I think you would make a valuable contribution.

Good idea. I’d love to be involved and I reckon I know two more photographers who’d be up for it too. The three of us just started a studio and we’re going to be looking for submissions for our new print magazine (more on that later).

I think “photographers in the pub” would be good too. Great way to meet others in the industry and share opportunities.

    I propose pints and planning.

sounds like something I’d be interested in, good idea (both the photography and pints).

Good stuff. I’ll give the call a few more days and set up a meet in the city centre pub next week some time. Andy, if your two friends want to drop in too, bring them along.

    Do you have to be a professional or semi-pro to join this group? I’m new to PhotographyIreland.net; Im by no means either pro or semi, but like the idea of growing my skills. http://www.flickr.com/photos/mardav/” onclick=”window.open(this.href);return false;

Hi all, the call for this is now closed. Thank you to all who expressed an interest. As soon as we are up and working effectively we will be putting out calls for new members. This may happen in the next 6 to 8 weeks, but this is unclear at present. If anyone wishes to contact me directly for more info regarding this you can PM me, or contact me via details provided on my website below.
Soon we will have a dedicated website up and running and we will post it here as soon as it has pictures in it.

    Hi Steve,
With the Steve McCurry exhibition on, I’m thinking of going to see it on 25th Feb and have posted a note up asking if anyone wants to meet up for a spot of Street Photography afterwards. You know of anyone who might be interested. I’ve had one response so far, but maybe I posted the notice in the wrong forum…. or maybe nobody is interested!!

    Cheers

I wouldn’t mind the occasional meet up but being from Wexford trips to Dublin would obviously be irregular. I’ll keep an eye out for progress.

That would be me then ;-) Actually..PI has always had a tradition of meet-ups on a regular basis in the past. I’ve been on many a fine days photography with some of the older members. Turn outs were always unpredictable though..sometimes you’d get 3 or 4…other times 20 people could turn up.

We usually end up in some pub or other by the evening ….that was a constant ;-)
