What settings would pros use in a situation where some big news story is happening. Major criminal being charged or someone leaving prison. The sort of scene you see on TV when they run after cars or hold cameras over the heads of others. Do they use auto camera settings?
wilcoMemberI would always use Shutter priority in my years in Fleet Street.
The most important thing to me was to eliminate all chance of camera shake.and for that I NEED to know at what speed my shutter is firing
The best news picture in the world is immediately devalued if it has camera shake.paulParticipantJustExposin’ wrote:

Most of the cameras in use don’t have “auto”. They would usually be good enough at photography to know how to use aperture priority, shutter priority or even full manual.

The best news picture in the world is immediately devalued if it has camera shake.I saw in a documentary that a papparazzi got one million dollars/or pounds for an out of focus grainy shot of Princess Diana kissing Dodi

When they hold it up over the crowd to shoot what setting would they use?

There is a difference between the two, he vast majority of photographers care about the overall quality of the image, that would include the composition, the content, the lighting and the actual image quality where as paparazzi (and to a lesser extent the press) it is all about the contents often not caring about the other aspects of the final image.

If it was me I would use aperture priority for without flash or manual with ettl for flash. But this also brings up the usefulness of knowing your gear, I know my camera and flash combo usually uses about 1/3 of a stop more flash than I generally like in my photos so I would have it set to ETTL – 1/3 but depending on lighting ect I may change that.
