    Some tips….

The moon (on a clear night), is lit directly by the sun. If you were shooting an orange lit by the sun, how would you set your exposure?
You can consider the moon to be at infinity.
The longer the lens the better.

    Hello

Yea you need the longest lens you can get
if you are using a big lens there is going to be a lot of weight
on the camera body so you need a sturdy tripod and a remote release.

I found when shooting the moon that i had to use a fairly fast shutter speed
because obviously we are moving in a different direction and speed to the moon and because
you are going to zoom closer to it the movement will be really noticeable.

Shoot as early in the evening as possible, just as the moon is rising
is great as wouldnt bo so bright and looks bigger because of the horizon.
Definitely use a tripod and play around with your settings till you are happy.

Assuming that you are shooting digital, you can start around f/8 and 1/125 and change the shutter speed to get a correct exposure. You just check the histogram on a couple of test shots. A good starting point for white balance in my opinion is the tungsten, but it can be tweaked later if you shoot raw. If you want to compose the moon into a landscape image, you will need to think about a time when you will get the same exposure for the ambient light, f/8 and 1/125 or whatever…

I tried the moon but to no avail.basically the long lense is essential then?

This was taken using a 500mm f8 mirror lens on a
tripod, but it is still not sharp, (the stars were added in ps)

cant remember what shutter speed was used but I do know that if it is too long
it just gets blown, I probably took about 50 shots to get this one all at different
    settings lol :)
