Well done MJ, you never cease to amaze me with these rare birds. Number one is an excellent shot.
Dave.
PeteTheBlokeMemberYou’re getting a great collection of unusual Irish bird photos MJ.
These are lovely.griangrafParticipantCheers for the feedback folks. I was looking for hares and harriers in the south Nagles. And this guy turned up. They appears to on passage north at the moment. Here is a slightly different shot MJ
BrickeeParticipantThese shots are wonderful
It must have felt good to catch this bird in flight.
GoosebankerParticipantLovely photo’s, the light is great and sets a lovely tone to the shots. Check out those focused yellow eyes. Used to see one of these near me a few years ago, didn’t even own a camera at the time but it was lovely to watch, big and easy to spot and could see the big “face” from a good bit away. Always think back now and dream of being in the right place with a camera and imagine what the shots would be like – now I’m jealous! Well done.
CooksterParticipantWe’re not worthy…
These are awesome. I love the 3rd one showing the full face and the golden sun lighting up under the wing.
If I may ask some questions? Can I ask what lens you used? Is the camera hand-held? and finally are these all auto-focus?
Thank you for sharing
Sean
griangrafParticipantCheers for the feedback Sean.
These were taken with a Sigma 500mm f4.5 prime – It’s a lighter, cheaper version of the canon 500mm f4. Still could set you back a bit new.
I used a Manfrotto 055 tripod with a Wimberley sidekick and Kirk ball head. All shots were taken with autofocus (either oneshot AF or AI AF. However, I lost some much better shots (real frame fillers) because the 40D autofocus started acting stupid. I would have preferred to use a 1Ds II it has a great AF but battery was low.

bingbongbiddleyParticipantThese are very nice indeed Griangraf, as stated already. Well done.
Looks like this is the same area where you captured a picture of a fox last year at some stage.
kenhParticipantMany thanks for sharing these Dr. M – the third one is particularly stunning!
MACParticipantNoely FParticipantBrilliant shots again from the good doctor! There were 3 flying around Asbourne rugby club last week
