Shrine attandants in downpour

There is a discussion going on on another thread about blurred photos. This is a photo I took recently but discarded as it is technically bad, because of blur.
I like the photo myself but I know it is poor, because of the pouring rain (a real downpour) the light was low, I shot at ISO800 (the safe max for 400D) but could only get 1/50s with the lens wide open at f/2.
What do you think, good or bad? Any input would be great.

yea it still captures a moment,

and regardless of the “Quality” a viewer might say . . .

    “What are they joking about”

it says this a picture from an oriental place, it says it is raining.

they are minimal points but as i said it captures an interesting
moment, iso, shutter speed and aperture aside.

Isnt that what photography in essence is about.

If this was taken with a HOLGA toy camera, people who are into
that would be praising no end. (no offence intended, i like some
of the stuff posted in the lo-fi section)

I like it. im gonna go through my discarded images too.

Maybe we can set up a new section here on pi too.

    Thanks Alan,
I like this photo a lot more than most of my technically better shots. I think perhaps it is a personal thing and it evokes a memory, of the day and the weather, captures a moment as you said.

I guess the big negative thing about it is that it would be a better shot if it was not blurred. The blur here is not part of the style nor substance, just a characteristic.

That evening I was gutted reviewing my photos, I had been in a shrine complex in a forest in torrential rain, took many shots but nothing seemed to work, partly due to the very low light.

    Cheers,

    Martin

I can see why you like it so much: its very appealing as an image and I feel it would be churlish to criticise it for the technical aspects..sure it is blurred, what can you do, the light was low…I think it benefits in some ways from the blur, I’m not sure if it would work perfectly if it was very sharp, and would be worse say if the umrella was in focus and the faces weren’t…
I like the way the delicate material of the umbrella comes through, and the facial expressions and costumes are great. Any idea what is in the yellow bag? Is it something exotic for the temple…..or just a packet of Murray Mints…..

I concur with the above. I think this is one to keep for yourself and for the memories. It not one to show to a wider forum such as on PI to ask for critique. But it could be shown to tell a story or to invoke a debate. BTW: I thought the yellow bag was a block of cheese on first review :-))

Cheers for the feedback. Next time in such a low light situation I’ll shoot manual and try to “push process” in photoshop to keep it reasonably sharp.

I’ve no idea what the yellow object is but on close inspection it does look like a paper bag, perhaps with some cheese for the temple mouse.

    Thanks,

    Martin
