I have a Sigma 10-20mm lens which is relatively new to me, ie I’ve had it for a while but have not used it much. Using it on a D300 I’m finding that it often won’t auto-focus at the 10mm end, if I zoom in to even 11-12mm it works well again. It doesn’t hunt at 10mm, it just does nothing. Is this normal for extreme wide-angle lenses?
I use several other lenses on the same body and they all focus normally.
No a d80. It focuses fine at 10mm on it. Only time it ever does anything is it may hunt a little in low light or on a very low contrast subject, it never just does nothing.
Using mine on a 400D – mine fell over last September – mine in fact fell over last september from a height of about 3 foot. The hood was one and it bashed on the floor, broke plastic off the side and destroyed the mirror box inside the camera – the lens still operates perfectly however. Might be a bad issue lense depending on your answers to NFL’s questions :(
When it fails it doesn’t hunt, it just does nothing at all. It happens more in low light but can also happen in strong light with lots of sharp edges to catch onto. I generally use spot focussing.
I will try the other focussing modes and also a D50 body and see if I get the same symptoms. I smell a trip to Sigma coming on….
I think I’ll skip the “dropping it 3 feet” treatment, but it’s nice to know I can do it if I need to :)
