Sigma 10-20mm or Tokina 12-24mm?

Okay.. This was sort of discussed on another thread. I can’t afford..and wouldn’t want..both of these.

So which one would be best? I’m more interested in build quality and sharpness than anything else. Although the slightly larger max aperture of the Tokina sounds good too. Plus the fact that it is across the zoom range.

I’ll be using this with a Nikon D80 and mostly I guess for landscape and Street shooting.

So which one do I buy?

That subject has been discussed a lot already.

Already been there Podge… usually my first port of call.

But I was interested in what the members here that use them thought.

Which is why I asked :D

    Thanks anyway….

I really like the Sigma 10-20 but I haven’t tried the Tokina so I cannot compare them.

Why don’t you go into Conns (or another camera shop) with your camera body and take a few test shots with each lens, process them at home and decide based on the results?

Might well do that Podge..nice idea :-)

Conns or Bermingham Cameras are usually very obliging if you explain that you are not sure which lens to purchase.

Aye..I’ve seen the Flickr group…is what put the goo on me in the first place…heheh!! Plus a few of the lads here have posted shots using it recently.

As I said in another post…was all but decided then read about the Tokina in another thread here and it put a doubt in my head.

It seems to have a better reputation for sharpness and distortion…although the 2mm apparently makes quite a difference at that size.

    Robbie,

In the latest ‘Digital Photo’ magazine there’s a Group Test of 8 Wide-Angle Zoom lenses.

Here are the lenses and how they scored (Features & Build, Performance, Image Quality, Value for Money, Overall)

    Canon 10-22mm (5,5,5,4,5) £490
    Nikon 12-24mm (5,5,5,3,5) £625
    Olympus 11-22mm (4,4,4,3,4) £549
    Pentax 10-17mm (4,3,3,3,3) £629
    Pentax 12-24mm (4,3,2,3,2) £360
    Sigma 10-20mm (5,5,4,5,5) £309
    Sigma 12-24mm (4,5,4,4,4) £449
    Tamron 11-18mm (3,3,4,3,3) £395

The Sigma 10-20mm is given the Gold Award. The Canon gets the Silver.

Granted, the Tokina 12-24mm isn’t included in the test.

I use the Sigma 10-20mm as does wonka. Distortion can be an issue but for the most part it does a pretty decent job.

    Regards,
    John

    That’s a bit crazy-
    I have the Sigma 10-20 and 12-24-
and I’d put the build quality of the 12-24 well above the 10-20-

Image quality of the 10-20 is better, but the 12-24 covers full frame-
and on a full frame its wider than a 10-20, obviously-
Although the 12-24 can have some nasty flare if pointed towards the sun,
a condition the 10-20 doesn’t suffer from at all-

The new best lens in category is the Nikkor 14-24 f/2.8, from tests I’ve seen-
also a full frame lens, and performs better than most primes, I hear-

Though it does cost multiples of everything else,
it does produce images of amazing quality-

    Don’t shoot the messenger.

Features & Build is a scoring category, not just build quality on it’s own. They do mention that the Sigma 12-24mm is the heaviest of the 8 being tested at 600g.

    I refuse to be drawn-
    ah, what the hell-

The 12-24 is slightly faster at the short end, also has HSM, has a rear filter slot, and covers full frame-
As well as being much more solidly built (I’ve tested it)

As image quality is given its own category, rated in 20% increments, I presume its not included in this one-

So I stand by my original assessment-

Believe it or not, I’m not having a go at you-
I don’t know this magazine, will never buy it, and am certainly not going to write to somebody
who’s next assignment might be to rate shower caps out of 5.

There are plenty of resources on the internet, with actual tests and examples-
and in this case, I’m writing of my own experience-

I’m not having a go at you, honestly-
    but I don’t have to believe everything I read…

Just a thought, and I’m not having a go at you either… but if you don’t know the magazine then it may not be wise to speculate about the people who conducted the tests. There’s a chance they may be more qualified than you.

Ok, so now it is getting personal-

I’ve had pictures published in emap publications, Ideal Home and House and Garden to name but two-
    editorial and advertising-
I’ve been in their offices, and know how they work-
They sell magazines- lots of different ones-

I’ve picked up low end magazines like that, maybe even that one-
and have been singularly unimpressed by them.

Maybe they are more qualified than me to have an opinion-
So that’s the end of my involvement in this thread-
