    hey folks,

i am lookin at an all rounder lens that i wont really hev to change when im out and about,
i have been loonking at these i think they will be around the same price. (?500)

well that is if they ever release the sigma, it doesnt look like it will ever arrive.

anyone have any other ideas, basically looking for relitavly wide angle and a
long enough zoom range, i know i will be sacrificing im quality, but i plan
on getting soem prime’s in the not to distance future.

    any suggestions welcome

    thanks

i don’t know about either of those two, but i owned the sigma 18-125 and it was horrible. i would not recommend this lens to anyone.

If you look at any reviews of Sigma lenses you’ll almost always see the question of Sigmas quality. If this is your choice I’d suggest buying locally so that you can check the quality. I’ve 2 Sigmas at the moment, a 10-20mm & a 50-500mm and both seem to be of good build and optical quality and I chanced both from Ebay. I can’t imagine the difficulties if they had been defective or inferior quality. I can’t vouch for Tamron yet.

Another factor to consider is that a range of lens from 18mm to 200mm and beyond will have some compromises. 18mm is wide angle, 200mm is telephoto so either one will be optimised at the sacrifice of the other unless there’s something I’m missing lately. I would have gone for this range myself when I started out but wouldn’t now.

I understand your reasoning for a one-size-fits-all lens but if you’ve a shoot in mind you will know your range requirements and fit accordingly.

There is a review of the Tamron on slrgear.com which compares with the sigma lens and depending on your needs it pretty much rates the tamron as a better all-rounder. the 18-250mm tamron even rates better than the tamron 18-200mm.

I am planning to get the tamron myself, but it will probably be the new year before I get the chance to order it.

    Hi Rob,

I’m using a Canon 400D with the Sigma 18-200mm (not the newer OS version, but the regular one) and if I was in the same position again, I think I would wait to get dedicated wide angle and telephoto lenses. That’s just my situation though, and if you are set on the 18-200mm, it’s OK. Not fantastic by any measure but as an ‘all-in-one’, as they say, it does the job.

It’s especially useful for travel photography, when its awkward to be changing lenses all the time, but it won’t give you fantastic shots. Haven’t used any Tamrons-so I can’t say how it compares.

    Hope this helps.

    Mark.
