Sigma 24-70 2.8

GfoxParticipant
Hey all
I am looking to invest in some new lenses..
Have been recommended to purchase the Canon 24-70 2.8 but its a little on the expensive side..
I was wondering does anyone have the Sigma version and if so how does it compare to the Canon.
There is a massive difference in price but I wonder does it show in quality and is it a false economy buying cheaper lenses? Thanks
BMParticipantBMParticipantI have the EX 24-70mm f2.8 DG Macro and am very happy with it. Solid build and good performance throughout the focal range.
The 28mm-70mm f2.8 EX DG is the one in the URL in my earlier post.
The 24-60mm f2.8 EX DG is usually good value secondhand.
GfoxParticipantThanks for the feedback BM the one you have is the one I am looking at.. What camera are you using it with?

scasMemberyou pay for what you get- i’ve never bought a sigma anything that i didn’t have to returned( sometimes twice) to get one without focus issues. having said that i have a sigma 24-70 which while feeling like its about to fall apart takes sharp pics at f4 or smaller- 2.8 is way to soft- but it doesn’t compare to my canon 24-70 in any way. so the canon is certainly much better , i doubt its worth 4 times as much even though i’m glad i have it.

I must be really lucky as I have a three Sigmas with no focus issues 10-20 105 macro and a 70-400
If Sigmas were as bad as that then I doubt if they would still be in business
GfoxParticipantThanks for the feedback all.. Given me some real food for thought. With cash being an issue at the moment I think I will get the Sigma and upgrade then later in the year.. I need to get rid of this kit lens.. The 24-70 Sigma can be got for just over 300 so I will go for that for time being I think!

I have the Sigma 24-60 f2.8 which is a great lens and I picked up for less than €160 if you forego the extra 10mm ??
Cheers Steve
liamtinneyParticipantI have had nothing but trouble with Sigma 24-70 2.8, wont focus correctly, stiff zoom ring, Sigma charged me €120.00 to repair it (only 13 months old and used once), and its still crap.
jonwrightParticipantLooking for this lens for my 500D if anyone can help I’d really appreciate it
thanks
Jong0riIIaParticipantI’ve been using a second-hand Sigma 24-70 f2.8, I’ve had it around 2 and a bit years now, used it on a Nikon D200, a D300 and now on a D700 – It’s been a great lens, robust but very heavy – weighs a ton! dropped once onto paving from about 6 or 7 foor while climbing a ladder for a shot the barrel broke – Sigma in Bandon were brilliant in terms of cost service and speed of repairs. I have since used the Nikon 24-70 f/2.8 a few times which is definitely superior, I will eventually upgrade. So if cash is an issue, then a (used) Sigma might be a great – just be sure to get a decent example.
