Sigma 50-500mm vs Sigma 80-400mm lens

Well i am keen to get either one of these lenses but cannot seem to find any good comparison sites online.
I am mainly looking at the lens to do surf/outdoor photography (generally using a tripod).
I know the 80-400mm has optical stabilisation but the reviews i read said the auto focus was slow does anyone have experience of this?
The 50-500mm does not have the OS, but does have the new HSM zoom.I am using a canon 350D.
Any pearls if wisdom welcomed, as i feel abit lost making the choice.
RodcunhaParticipantI don’t know how much you have to spend and if you can or not wait to get a couple of hundred euro more, but for only a bit more you could get the Canon EF 100-400mm F/4.5-5.6 IS USM witch as far as I know is a better lens than the two sigmas.
I’m sure Canon users will have better feedback from this than I do.Regards,
Rod
constantineParticipantI dunno about the sigma 50-500mm, but I got to have a go with the sig 80-400mm down in Limerick the other day, as well as the Canon 70-200mm.
No comparison really. Sig 80-400mm af was very slow, and when you had the focal length at 400mm, you had serious barrel extension. The canon seemed to be a lovely lense, real fast at 2.8.
GrahamBParticipantI have the Sigma 100-300 ( i think, i rarely use it anymore )
I find the AF very slow in comparison to the Canons.I ordered the Canon 70-200 and it’s really quick in realtion tot he Sigma.
Oh and worth noting that I.ve just heard that I need to the Sigma “tightened”
aparently the reason why some of images looked soft was due to a 1/100 issue
with manufacuring whereby the lens might need to be tightened.MartinParticipanthave a look at Tamrons 200-500 superior to Sigmas current offerings listed above

joe_elwayParticipant50-500 (Bigma) is slow but produces super shots. There was a guy on Phototakers from Canada who used to take the most amazing wild Owl in-flight shots with it. A lens that long will require some rock solid support.
griangrafParticipantI use both but less and less of late. Firstly, both are heavy. Image quality seems to be slightly better with the 50-500mm. However, it is a lens that should be fused to a solid tripod at all times and does require plenty of light. It is the ultimate set up, sit and wait wildlife lens. Barrel extension is large in both lens. The OS in the 80-400mm is noisy but does work. You can handhold but again you need good light and it can get tiring after a while. If you could wait and shop around for a while I would recommend trying to get a second hand (or new depending on your budget), canon 300mm f/4 with or without IS which is probably around the same price (850-1300 euro). It lighter, sharper, faster and can be used with full AF with a 1.4x extender. Hope this helps
