Sigma lens repair – best route

    Hi Folks,

Looking for some advice – I have a Sigma 24-70/2.8 EX DG that has decided that I don’t need to focus on anything less than 5′ away. I have a focus restriction of 5′ – infinity. Obviously I’ll have to get this looked at – I took off the camera mount plate and saw a dark hole with electronics, springs and rings so decided that was as far as I was going to take it myself.
Should I send it to Sigma UK or is there someone “local” that can provide repair facilities?

    Alan.

I’ve just left a Sigma 10-20 in for repair through Conns Cameras ( it went for a swim in a rock pool!). The send it to Hahnel in Bandon, Cork, who are the agents. Haven’t got a quote yet, but it was only last week.

Thanks Ger. I was looking up the Sigma UK site and they have Hahnels as a “distributor and service centre” so I mailed them this morning. Hahnles website says nothing about service or repair so I wasn’t sure about them. Thanks for the confirmation.
By the way – mine went into a rock pool a few years back and survived!! Now it can’t handle normal use…some will say a rock pool is the best location for Sigma!!

Thanks Dave. I’ve submitted the info. Coincidentally I got a reply from Sigma UK telling me to contact Hahnels and I got a reply from them telling me that they can’t give me a price until they see it. Understandable, but Sigma UK do have a price scale depending on lens type.

Hi can someone help please, I used a nissan flashgun on my canon eos60d and now my flash won’t even pop up, the menu tells me that the external flash is still attached. As you have probably guessed I am a newby. Cheers

Well, as some probably know on here now – I bit the bullet. And my bottom lip several times. I had made a couple of exploratory attempts to see what was causing the damage to my lens getting further into the lens each time. Last night I bit the bullet and tried a fix.
15 screws (with thread lock), blistered fingers and a couple of minor mishaps with fragile connectors and I got to the barrel of the lens. Seemingly a roller screw on the zoom mechanism had come loose and fell out so I put it back in and rebuilt the lens. A few tentative re-assemblies to get all the mechanics working right and the lens connectors in the right place and the lens is now back operational again.
Would I recommend it? Well, depends on your viewpoint. Mine wasn’t under warranty and worse came to worst I could always have sent a bag of bits to Hahnels to re-assemble albeit at a cost I suppose. But for peace of mind and if still under warranty I’d get it professionally done. Considering mine had made a visit to a rock pool a few years back I figured it owed me nothing at this stage.

Good work Alan! Of course you know that you should have documented the fix with photos ;) :D

Erm…yes Mark. But my lens was broke… ;-)
To be honest I thought about it but I didn’t want to tempt fate and document a horror story. I can give a detailed step by step if someone wants it complete with possible pitfalls.

    Me neither Steve. :sick
Did quite a bit of sweating. But I figured I had nothing to loose. Quite easy though when you’re systematic about it and take your time. Also having the correct screwdriver for the tiny screws helps as they were all put in with thread lock and they were initially difficult to remove. The incorrect screwdriver would have turned the heads beyond removable.
And no, I won’t be doing it for anyone else. :D

    Damn :(
I attempted a fix on a starblitz flash that cost me nothing, it still doesn’t work and is held together by masking tape. I’ve decided not to try fix my Sigma 28-70 auto focus problem,it works fine manually.

I refer the right honourable gentleman to the second post on this thread. Mine was a physical jam…yours seems like something else.
