One photographer, one camera, one light and one Rita.

    Good simple portrait Rob-
    good expression and nice tonality-

If I were in control of that light,
I might have moved it a little higher, and a little more to the front- but not much-
the nose shadow is a bit horizontal-

    Good one though-

What Joseph said :) also move your model forward slightly to darken the background a bit, the tones would have a more balanced feel then, with the face being brighter than the background (IMO). Keep it up, you’re lucky to have a “willing” model (or is there some coercion going on here).

    Thanks Joseph and Simon.

Good points made (I’m soaking all this up) about the shadows; I achieved the
softness I wanted but the angle could definitely be improved. And a darker background
would also improve the overall effect.

Yes, very fortunate to have a willing model, and the more I photograph her, the more
comfortable she becomes in front of the lens. It’s taken a while, and gigabytes of
unuseable images, to get to the point where I can get a relaxed expression in at
least one in five shots. No coercion necessary, just a little bribery from time to time…

‘Simple’ is what you said, but it’s almost clinical. That’s not a bad thing
necessarily, don’t get me wrong. I’d love to see Reets cracking a big smile
some time though. Maybe you could do a wee song and dance routine to bring
a laugh to that characterful fiss?

That said, this is a well-executed shot if I’m any judge.

No problem Pete. I’ll post one soon, smiles in abundance…

    Hi Robert.
I agree with the other’s suggestions.
I would like to see her not so straight to camera, at more of a 45 degree angle also.
A reflector at the shadow side of her face would eliminate those shadow areas, white card would do in the absence of a commercial reflector. ( I have one or two which I don;t need if you’re interested!)
    Keep em coming!

Thanks for your comments Biddy. All suggestions appreciated greatly.
What a wonderful resource this place is… all this information for free. Best
    money I’ve never spent….

The expression doesn’t work for me I’m afraid Rob. Her bottom lip looks as if it has movement, or as if she is just about to speak, if you know what I mean. I agree about the ‘too face-on’ comment, and would prefer to see a more oblique angle. But at least you don’t have to pay the model (toooo much) to try it again.

Wives have a way of exacting their toll.

 Aint that the truth Pete…

Thanks for the comment Ross. Odd, but I never noticed that bottom lip
before, and I think you’re right; it does look as though she’s about to speak.
Must check some of the others from the same session and see what’s there…

    Rob.
