Sinead at Africa Day
-
ExpresbroParticipant
Couple of shots of Sinead O’Connor during her brief time on stage with Republic of Loose at the Africa Day Celebrations in Dublin Castle yesterday.
She literally threw up her arm just as I was about to shoot the first one, but I really like her smile..so I’m not worried about the arm too much
and a Black and White conversion of another one..

RobMemberVery good Robbie.
I like both, the first being my preferred despite the raised arm.
Great smile, as you say. Magenta may be a little strong, but that
could be down to stage lighting; might be nicer a little warmer…Rob.
stasberMemberYou lucky burgers up in the castle Robbie, I worked my ass off in Cork at a crappy little venue – almost pitch dark inside, and strong light in the lane outside (= strong shadows = fill flash nightmare) covering Cork’s Africa Day. Pay was pretty small too but better than nowt, still I have a few more pictures for my portfolio.
That’s a nice little set you’ve got yourself on Flickr by the way. I’d agree with Rob’s comments on the two posted, though I don’t particularly care about the arm – she’s a performer and to me her expression and raised arm is connecting with the audience, so nice capture. Nice composition too. I’d be very happy with it.
The second I’d prefer a bit stronger contrast, lighten it up a bit and deepen the blacks. Not a huge fan of conversions generally as most tend to look the same and have that ‘digital conversion’ look about them.
ExpresbroParticipantThanks Guys.
Have to say..the magenta was not anything like as strong on my monitor at home. I used a selective colouring layer in PS to reduce it and thought I had it looking pretty good till I looked on my work monitor this morning. There was some kind of strange red light on most of the performers which exaggerated skin tones at times.
Damn I’m going to have to get my hands on the camera club calibration kit soon.
Still..easily corrected :D
Sorry to hear ya had to work hard down in Cork Stas..mind you..getting paid for photography is pretty cool though
It was pretty handy in Dublin Castle. Have a whole heap of stuff to get through yet. All I had to contend with was a few over exhuberant dancers..I was even one of them for a little while…hehe!!
jb7ParticipantColour one definitely-
I wouldn’t have seen the hand as a problem,
still don’t. even now you mention it-
She doesn’t look well in the mono-
maybe too dark?j
DenverDollParticipantLooks like you had fun Robbie and the shots are just great.
Nice to get so close. I’d never be taking photos though. I’d be absorbed in the show.
Glad to see these..well done~

I tells ya when you’re taking pics of stuff you could care less about, have to follow a brief, run around for 8 hours non stop (only saw 2 mins of the Heineken Cup goddamit but still it’s the right result!), pore over camera settings almost every shot and produce results then deliver them quickly… it becomes another underpaid job requiring one hell of a lot of work! After all that, the beer would need to be pretty cool ;) Stick to the hobby Robbie, stick to the hobby.
ExpresbroParticipantHehe!! I have every intention of Stas… I love it too much to let money interfere with it…..
Are you full time Pro now Stas?
Joseph…both of these shots look darker here than I originally thought…damn monitors. I have the brightness on my monitor at home turned right down to about 30% and it still looks too bright.
Then again..maybe the room is darker too… unfortunately I don’t have any proper editing tools on this PC.
Shar ..thanks..and I actually did get into the music too…well..not so much with Sinead cos she was only on for the one song and I wanted to get some decent shots of her.
Kila were rocking…really stole the show in my opinion..You’d love them.
stasberMemberKila are always brilliant live, every time I’ve seen them it’s absolutely kick-ass. You won’t be disappointed, highly recommended. If you’re a rhythm fiend then try to get onto a Ronan O Snodaigh solo gig if you can (they’re not too frequent). If you’re on the ball then you’ll know about his skills in playing the bodhran (which don’t involve a penknife :D).
Robbie – you’re kidding me ;) when people ask me, then ‘semi pro’ sounds better than ‘amateur doing this on the side’ . One of the reasons I didn’t go full time (apart from needing to learn a lot more than I have) was that I didn’t want the job to kill my passion for it, plus I wouldn’t spend as much time with the pics as I’d like to. I’m only really interested in music & dance photography and get roped into stuff through people & recommendations, so it keeps me busy and sometimes paid. I’m house fotog at the Savoy, which is unpaid, but I get to some great gigs with carte blanche, and the venue asks for pics for its web gallery. Some bands have a 3 song rule.
Oh, and do get your monitor calibrated, put it on your priority list, otherwise you don’t really know what you’re going to get every time you post something or print something.
ExpresbroParticipantAh right Stas..
Can’t say I blame ya on the Pro font…and if you can make a few bob from it on the side…all the better..fund more gear..damn it’s an expensive hobby at times 8)
I must check out Kila next time they are playing… great energy okay..without a doubt.
Republic of Loose we’re pretty good too…if it wasn’t for yer man Mick Pyro going on and on about people not dancing or singing or whatever would have been REALLY good. I hate hearing bands whinge about the crowd…if yer doing yer job properly they will enjoy themselves…and if they don’t then no amount of complaining is gonna help in my view.
They have a fairly unique sound for an Irish band though….they don’t sound Irish..if ya know what I mean… Funny videos too.
Yer man has some set of pipes on him too….. reckon he’d blow Jamiraquai or whatever he’s called out of the water…
