That story stinks. I bet the bats and cave bears got fed up with your critique and reported you to the wildlife rangers to get rid of you… and now you are back on the site.

I spent a meditative and introspective
month in a cave trying to figure out if I’m a really nasty bloke.

So, did you expect to see Andy coming in through the entrance with Lidl dingy over his shoulder? Or is that what brought you out??

I’m surprised the “Rita Incident” sent you astray. It was a peculiar episode but goes down in history along with the 5×4 thread. I suppose, agree or not, it does make the site change its dynamic in a way.

BTW – are yourself and NFL taking turns in that cave of yours??

I’ll be very frank Alan, and this is between you and me; I wondered if
internet-level interaction brings out a side of me (and probably others)
that isn’t very pleasant. Some of the things we say in emails, text messages
and forums like this are things we would never say face to face. There’s
also a danger that the fire-and-forget verbal missiles that we fire off
all over the place are changing the whole nature of human relations. I give
out to my kids about SMS comms because people end up getting really hurt
by comments that the writer might regret within an instant.

So, trying to practice what I preach, I decided to curtail my online socialising.

    Didn’t last long, did I?

To be honest, you probably haven’t been here enough to say whether
there’s a decline or not. No disrespect like.

Unless you think things have gone down hill since you joined??

Oh things went down hill WHEN I joined hehehe. Yeah yeah but they all have to up their game now.

Pete isn’t it all a reference to the current state of activity really? So here a week or a lifetime it’s anyone’s take on what the vibe is here. Contrary to people’s (snap judgement) opinion of me I’m not into running things down. I signed up to this site many years ago and easily drifted away again in favour for others. The athmosphere was then and is now for me flat. But that’s just to me. Unlike JB I don’t feel the need to complain about it openly, what purpose does that serve?
It’s like any social gathering, it suits you or it doesn’t. Put me at a world cup soccer final and I’ll probably spend the time looking at the architecture of the stadium, put me at any rugby game in any open park and I’ll be itching to get on to the field – and you’d be forgiven to think they’re the same thing. Forum against Forum.

Pete I like much of what you’ve written.
In particular on Irish run websites you’ll think and talk like we self righteously think or we’ll shout you down, a lot like that little catholic nun in school that used to threaten me with god’s wrath and all that. The Brothers just knocked, whipped and tore the b*l*x out of us, not much better but at least it’s not mental torture.
On Irish forums if we don’t act as the tosspot ops want us to we get banned. Free expression is not welcome. You may not give your opinion in your own way using your own words or phrasing because when on our internet site you must leave your Dublinese at the door and be a pretentious knob. Boards.ie is a clear example of such pathetic wastage. I can imagine Brendan Behan, Roddy Doyle, James Joyce and a few others getting the little D4 tossers that run the place and giving them a belt about the head for every f***ing asterix on their forum.

Then you mention SMS messaging and such communication – I agree with all of that to a large extent and you’re right to keep an eye on it but keep in mind what’s written and what’s read can be 2 different things also. A simple poke in the ribs can be taken as an insult, a bit like not getting the joke because you’re tired. “You twat” between mates is understood as playful, to a stranger it’s probably an offence. That example is probably obvious but other straight written factual text on forums the user must apply their own emotion to it, and where does that lead us? (Not wanting to start another thread on “how to critque” here)

But as for the free-speech concern… we’ll I’m still here aren’t I?! The boss was a bit concerned about it. I did have to explain myself away but sure I don’t care either way. It was all a great source of amusement. Oh and I can assure you, you were not at odds with everyone else, plenty agree with my straight talk ;0)

So why is the site flat? Well maybe it’s coz it’s a small knit community, we’re all stuck on this ransacked island in a dire depression. That’s got to spill over on to the vibe right? Maybe from this small community we have a limited view on photography or a limited range of subjects to excite the mind and we’ve seen them all? Maybe it’s peer pressure? oooh? We’ll we’ve seen how I stood on a few toes and if we want to stay palsywalsy then we don’t raise any dust? Or maybe it’s just JB posting misery onto the site whining on about how we’re all failing to amuse him enough lately and what’s in it for him these days? Didn’t someone else post “I’m bored” – Sell you’re ****** computer and buy a football!

It’s hardly the site’s fault so, it’s here to bring people together (unstiffled)… Get Creative! Start a project. Post something useful in the Site Suggestion’s box “Like Nossie for Ops!”

What I like about this site; it’s full of paddies. What I don’t like about this site; it’s got a fair share of pretentious knobs on it and people that want to give their opinion more than get an opinion. Ah well but “this is the internet and none of it matters”, unless you think a bit like Pete.

Now I really have to go, it’s getting close to drinking and roaring time and I have a lot to do still.

I am probably one of the older heads here, and the fact that I dont post images is simply, that I cant get out as much as i should.

The Glendalough trip was the first time i got out with the camera in ages, the fact that i had enough time to organise a Saturday off was testament to that. I have to agree with the rest that the newbie v older members have been discussed and the willing to help someone can lead to all sorts.

Fact is, like any camera club, people move on, people slow down, people are busier than ever at other things in life.

I log in everyday when i am on the computer , but sometimes a lurker than a poster, but im still not far off knowing whats going on.

A site is only as good as its membership, so is a camera club, you always need new ideas, new ways of challenging members, and if it generates enough interest then your on a winner.

Yes, I’m a bit surprised by that also-
although I’d agree with the observation about the dynamic-
I wonder if it has had an effect on others too?

Rob hasn’t been back since either, I suppose…

Does this mean we’re closer to identifying the timing and reason for the decline?

Oh, and again, thanks for all the nice comments earlier,
very embarrassing, I didn’t set out to solicit them, and wasn’t expecting them-

I think that is rarer than your post might indicate. While there are those present on PI who work very hard at creating an on-line persona very much different to their real selves, I believe that most of us here seek to present ourselves as we actually are – and would stand over in person what we post on PI. My view of PI is that the members are all quite genuine and sincere – evidenced by the atmosphere when we get together, a lot of banter and relatively little angst (given the volume of posts and discussion material).

In such a small island, I always believe it is best to behave on-line as you would expect to be perceived in person.

I fear that we “be ourselves” a little too readily. When we’re face
to face we probably behave a bit better. That’s what I was saying –
a side of me that I don’t like very much sometimes comes bursting
    out.

If I whacked people when I was drunk, I would stop drinking.

Someone’s going to give me 10 Our Fathers and a Hail Mary in a minute…

    Folks,

Nossie has been banned from the site. He’s not the first of course and thankfully its been a while
    since someone was banned.

I’d appreciate it if you don’t talk about him when he’s unable to respond.

Any comments, please feel free to PM me instead.

    Thanks !

While I respect your request not to talk about Nossie in his absence, I do have one question that has me curious. It took Nossie 140 posts to get banned, is this a record?
