Site in Decline?
-
MarkKeymaster
Hi Dave,
Not sure, but we do have an offense process which I follow and in all cases
I try and give people the benefit of the doubt. Thanks
TinyMemberHope no one minds if i add my 2 cents worth…….
I cant say really if the site is in decline or not. When i originally joined the site i was worried about posting shots that were not up to scratch and getting laughed off the web ( like a lot of newbie’s I would imagine ) for me the idea was to post, have people show me where i went wrong, how i could improve etc etc etc. As i got more confident i began commenting on peoples photos, which i still do , but not as much, for several reasons, such as, when twenty other people have said how good a shot is, is my post warranted?, and i lot if the time i would not say i am qualified to make comments on other peoples shots as i am no expert, but when you post a shot, it gets over 200 views and no comments, you begin to wonder what you did wrong and to who…….But over all this site ( in my opinion ) is a fantastic resource for people with an interest in photography throughout Ireland. True its a bit clicky which is a bit off putting at times, but if you have ever been on the other irish photography site which i wont mention, the clicky factor is not a that big a deal here,I think it would be a shame if some of the more seasoned members were to pull out of the site, i think it would be a loss to the site over all and to the newbies who join here looking to improve and get advice from someone local ( relatively ) and not from the writer of a magazine who has all the best gear and no interaction with the people who are looking for advice and constructive criticism of their work so as they can lean and improve.
sorry for ranting on….
Niall
miki gParticipantToo true. I joined up for the exact same reasons and a little or a lot of “constructive” critism is fine. I don’t mind if someone slags me off in good spirits, and in fact I normally like when someone does take the p*ss a little, as it lightens the mood of the critism. But I believe that most members here are adults and should act accordingly and it’s sad to see some of the bitching and snide remarks made by some. While I know that personality clashes happen in all types of groups, I think it should be kept off the site. I do believe in free speech, but spoken with respect for others. As for clicks, they also happen everywhere. If I’m not part of it, who cares? Not me. I just think that all members regardless of their experience etc should just act as grownups and show respect when posting.
SodafarlMemberJB, I don’t know whether or not the site is in decline but it does be affected if anyone rocks the boat. It does result in members not posting as often but i think most are like myself and will log in at least once a day (some people more often). There are cliques and there is a lot of experienced photographers who are only to willing to pass on advice or criticism were it is needed. If posters take offence to these criticisms then why are they posting in the first place. It is when the criticism is not constructive or gets personal it is then we see the true members coming out in force to help or back each other up. I really don’t post many pictures and that is down to me not taking enough, sometimes my C&C may be a little stale but I do try to be as honest and polite as I can. As for your comments I love to read them and have learned quite a bit from the advice you give others.
So what I think I am trying to say is that this site gets stronger because of the likes of your self, Irishwonker NFL Rob and more, there are also a lot of newcomers such as 5faythe, Miki G etc who have also helped to maintain the strength within the site.
Long may it continue to run and get better.
Thanks Mark.Soda
jb7ParticipantThanks Soda-
I think miki found the one true keyword here- respect.
Nobody here knows each other, at least until they actually meet up-
and this does happen from time to time, and leads to characters being literally ‘fleshed out’.At that point, you can decide whether you can actually get on or not-
If people turn up here and are disrespectful and offensive, and follow up with obscene pm’s,
then I bend the rules slightly, and take an immediate dislike to them.
I find it saves time.Not to say that these people don’t have their fans and apologists;
it amazes me how these people can live in such a logic free and hypocritical world,
but that’s the internet for you- or real life- whatever- but they do choose their battles-
I find the best way to deal with them if they persist is to ignore them-
and they don’t like that. This has gone off on a bit of a tangent, not sure what the Goat number for that one is-
but the site is a living, breathing thing-
and I have seen an improvement since I posted my little rant-
If it continues to improve then it’ll be continuing its overall trajectory since Mark began it-
and this little episode might be seen as no more than an out of character blip-
which I sincerely hope it is-I suppose I could go on and on, but I won’t-
there’s other more important things to talk about-
like photography-Thanks for all the replies-

Noely FParticipantI’m still lurking……..Incognito…hiding from ” The Man” :D In the early days I’d post lots of images that I thought were worthy.
Now I’m older and wiser I’m more critical with my shots, hence the absence of imagery from me
I can assure you though, the next shot I post will be worthy of National Geographic :DthedarkroomParticipantjb7 wrote:

So people are sending obscene PM’s? I would certainly feel that if something has started on the public forum then that’s where it should stay. Taking a discussion in to the private domain of PM’s changes the whole context of a forum exchange and them becomes, in this case certainly, intimidation and unacceptable. If people can’t behave with a certain amount of dignity and respect then maybe they should avoid the site completely. I see nothing wrong with discussions getting a bit heated and the regular cajoling, but it needs to be within reason. People can be passionate about certain issues but when they sticking to the subject it usually comes to a conclusion where everyone either agrees, or agrees to disagree but respect each others views. We’ve seen it here before and it should be encouraged.
I think Joseph’s time saving measure referred to in his last paragraph is the way to go with stroppy customers.David

This man I must thank for introducing me to the site. As for c+c always honest and polite. Wouldn’t expect anything less for your next posting.
Talk to you later.
Sodajb7ParticipantDave, I reposted it in a thread about unwanted spam pm’s,
and Steve immediately deleted it-
I wasn’t the only one who got them…Noely, where’s the pictures?
I was always completely impressed with your improbable macros-
you even had me trying it…Get some more up-
Noely FParticipantI’ve moved away from homemade macro shots, I leave the macro to the other lads, Vivid etc.
I know I dont post critique too often but I always have a look  Howya Soda, I’ll get you to write
my epitaph…you make me sound great  Hang in there JB7! ” Get some more up”……Ooo er Vicar!ExpresbroParticipantOh my!! Seems there’s been quite a lot of goings on around these parts lately… ;-)
I’d be one of the people who used to post a lot..and now don’t. Not really for any particular reason. Yes I spend more time on Facebook..but that is not a photography thing..it’s just somewhere handy that I can catch up on people from all parts of my life, and people who I share interests with..not just photography.
I still check in here regularly…and I see a lot of new faces, which is great…it’s what the site needs. A lot of the experienced people who were members when I first signed up to PI have sinced moved on and new people have replaced them. The older crew still pop in now and again, but that is the way of Internet sites. This is the one site online that I have kept coming back to over the years. I too have visited other photography sites, but I never found the sense of community that I found here.
But like any community…people sometimes become too familiar…like a pair of old slippers..and it gets a bit samey and your attention wanders. Then something changes..and a new life gets breathed into the place and things improve..people reappear..disappear again…it’s just goes around.
I think when Mark gets the upgrade finally settled then that will of course bring in new people and ideas…and some people will hate it..some will love it and it goes on..
As I’m only too aware from the various meet up’s I’ve been involved in..the most recent being only last Saturday…a lot of the members here on PI are multi faceted people..they are not ONLY photographers…they have other interests..other skills..so it shouldn’t be surprising that they drift from time to time.
For me personally, whenever I think of Photography I think of PI. Simple as.
Even though I don’t post very often now…I still do whatever I can to promote the site to new photographers I meet because it is without doubt the best Photography site on these Islands. I still love to meet up with the members here and enjoy a social evening with them. I will continue to do so.
In the end I believe it is just a circle… certain people will come to the fore and others will drift off over the lifetime of the site….believe it or not..in a year or two newer members might not even know who NFL or Irishwonkafan or Rob or maybe even JB7 (unlikely ;-)) were. Just like there are members now who don’t know the likes of Ciaran, or Ali, or Roberto or Paperdoll or Thorsten or even, heaven forbid, Expresbro are ;-)
The main thing, imo, is that Mark maintains an interest in the site. As long as he is around there’ll be no fear of it disappearing.
Now..that’s probably more than I’ve posted in the last year…
So I’ll shut up now ;-)

Blasphemy…

Not at all, sure doesn’t that give you a whole new audience to tease with your lists as they will be unsuspecting and vulnerable
AlessiaParticipantwell, I know that maybe I’m not an enough experienced PI-er to comment about this thread but what i think is that if an event like the recent LoFi day was able to gather together so many (great) people -and probably much more were not able to come but they would have liked to be there!), it means that the forum is far from disappearing!!!!!!
(even if someone do not know who NFL is! )thedarkroomParticipantAnd John . . . nobody wore baseball caps. There must have been a collective lapse of memory on that one . . . but not to worry.
We all recognised each other on the day and it was great fun.
