Skin Retouching / Airbrushing
-
EMCParticipant
Hi there,
I have been playing around with different ways to airbrush skin to give that polished magazine look but i was just wondering what most people use for this? I have followed tutorials for gausssian blur, surface blur and so on. Does anyone have an action that they wouldnt mind sharing?
Thanks
EMCcathaldParticipantI dont do much portrait stuff but when retouching is requested i use a plugin for cs3 called imagenomic portraiture
stcstcMemberyou should have a look at guy gowans way of working
no plugins required and fantastic results
he has a dvd for retouching
ashleycort31ParticipantPortrait professional 9 is fantastic software for that magazine look- air brushing, its very easy to use and saves lots of time!!

thanks for the tip, i tried it yesterday and couldn’t believe the result. very easy to use and great results in matters of few clicks.
I suppose it’s all possible to do it in photoshop but i guess it would take couple of hours and you would need to be quiet good at it;)
i might post the before/after pics later onshphotoMemberclami79Participantashleycort31ParticipantjaybeeParticipantditto the guy gowan dvd….
there is no substitute for actually understanding what is happening when you are airbrushing (or any other photoshop technique)
not being mean, but I’d say you way overcooked the smoothing in the above example…
IMHO what should always be in your head when performing a process like this is…
if I show the subject this image, I want them to think “I” made them look this fabulous, NOT photoshop…. People are so immersed in images these days that they are well educated in spotting when an image has been heavily retouched…
Keep it realistic and it will be far more impressive!!
johnnycorcoranParticipantjohnnymcParticipantI’m just after downloading the trial version of Portrait Professional.
It seems very thorough…….but time consuming.
I’ve been using Guy Gowan’s methods for the past two years and they are brilliant. I’m well rehearsed on his processing but I’ve recently toyed with the idea of trying different faster methods (spending too much time processing wedding photos).
After looking at the trial version of Portrait, I reckon Guy’s method is faster and the eyes in particular have a much better processing (sharper and vibrant) than portrait professional.Just my two cents worth :) .

John
Chris MoodyParticipantI’m not familiar with Guy Gowan’s methods but can give a resounding thumbs up for Portrait Pro. I tend to switch the face sculpting off and just use the skin smoothing tools. I think it’s very good value and well suited to the Photographer who can’t afford to spend too much time retouching but requires quality results, the results are also finely adjustable and don’t have to be over the top. The studio version offers a Photoshop Plug-in and some automation. I couldn’t recommend it more.
markst33ParticipantAs a matter of interest, can this Portrait Pro cope when there are 2+ people in the shot or is it only for individual portraits. I downloaded the trial version but it would appear that it only allows you to mark up the eyes, nose etc of 1 person.
markst33ParticipantActually scratch that. I just found the “Enhance another face in this photo setting” :)
LWheelerParticipantI found some great tutorials on Youtube about retouching that you might be interested in:
