The last time I saw this little fella he was irritated and rowdy. Maybe the valium has kicked in.

Jaysus, he is getting uglier and uglier! Poor chap.

Nicely taken Alan. Don’t think I would’ve taken a landscape style shot … but I would’ve been wrong. I like this the way it is.

The last time I took a shot of him the foreground grass was interfering with the shot. I tried a few portrait this time too but there was too much foreground distractions too but I liked the composition of him this way. And yeah, puck ugly. At least he was quiet.

I was disturbed to see Matt locked up in a small viewing room too. He was clearly aggitated and looking for a way out. Is there a reason for this that you know of?? Nobody, but nobody that stopped thought this was fair treatment of an animal as the room was too small in our opinion and I thought he was distressed.

That’s a really unusual shot. For a minute you think “what’s that!”. Well captured. There was something that put me off taking photos of the owl(s) the last day I was there. Are they behind a thick net fence or something like that ?

    Is Matt an owl ?

Yeah the fences are still there. If you use a shallow DOF and obviously focus on the subject tight you’ll never see the fence.

Matt? Matt is the male lion. I couldn’t hear him bellowing on my walk around the African plains – I wanted to frighten the bejaysus out of the young lads and was wondering what was going on. The female lion was waiting outside the enclosure. It’s not something I found comfortable looking at.

He’s an old cat so he’s likely going to be prone to illness. That could’ve been it. When he walks, you can see how old his body is. He’s probably long past his natural age if he was in the savannah. I’ve seen them both being taken in one at a time for treatment of some sort in the past. Whatever was going on, I’d say the care of the two cats was firmly in the minds of the keepers.

Hugh, as Alan says, a small DOF (large aperture) helps throw the fence out of focus. 99% of my zoo shots are taken this way. I prefer to shoot through the fence instead of the dirty or blurry glass. You also need to get as close to the fence as possible and shoot with a long lens, e.g. I’m often at 400mm and F5.6 or maybe slightly slower.

Thanks I’ll have to try shooting through the fence. This must be Matt then. He was out just over a week ago when I was there. He has quite a roar all right!
