Slide to digital conversion.

I am wondering what is the best most efficient way to convert old slide photos to digital. I dont want to spend a fortune on a scanner but at the same time I dont want to lose quality and editing ability.

Suggestions appreciated

I use a flatbed scanner with slide or negative capability. (Epson 4490). Surprisingly good results even with 35mm. Not expensive.

Thanks for the info guys, I am using a canon eos 450D and the slides were taken with an olympus back in 92. The Novoflex looks complex, will check it out and the epson 4490.
