Yeah – what Robbie said. Fricked Owls. they think they are so cool because they can spin their heads all the way around

When presenting on the web a border is needed. You have to seperate the shot from the rest of the site.
Some borders then to be feature on their own. A simple black border will simply focus the viewers attention into the area of the shot.
A fancy border will distract the viewer and take the eye away from the shot itself.

If you are doing a border for sharing online then I’d say you should consider how you would mount the shot if you were framing it. Some of the best borders you see are clean and simple. There’s some great examples on this site every now and then. Just make sure it doesn’t impose on or detract from the image you are presenting.

As for shooting these owls … I posted one of this chap a few weeks back. It was actually shot on a sunny afternoon from the left-hand corner at the penguin side of the enclosure. I opened up the aperture and got close (to blur out the fence). The composition was vertical because the subject was vertical. The focus was on the eyes but I “centre metered” (as much as a 350D allows) from the brightest part of the subject. It sometimes pays to even underexpose beyond what the camera suggests because white just reflects light like a mirror, thus blowing out. Take your shot and then evaluate it on the LCD. I could live with shadow, etc because I caught him with his eye in the light, thus it was a fairly balanced looking exposure.

And forget about shooting the other Snowy (a female?). She stays off at the back where you get a nasty artifical looking background.

Aiden, well done for your honest critique. I’ve got fed up of posting pictures on here becase everyone just says they are nice. I would not put up a pic if I didnt think it was nice enough but I want critique so I can improve.

Thanks John. It’s the only way we can learn from each other. Otherwise we’ll just keep repeating the same mistakes and never improve.
