Just a feww images from an Under 16 soccer match, played locally. My own son is the lad on left hand side in No 2.

C and C welcome. Oh and before someone tells me, I know I have room to crop more… Just didn’t feel like doing so! :)

Lovely clear images…That Sigma is working well…I am struggling lately to get any decent sharp sports images the light has been so bad :(

Thanks. Ya, very happy with the Sigma, and recently I have started shooting sports using only back-button focusing instead of the shutter. I have found that I get 95% keepers compared to a much lower ratio when using half press of shutter button. The combo of D7000 and Sigma 2.8 is really working well, delighted with both lens and body. Wouldn’t mind a 300 f4 though sometimes, for days when light is good; just for the little bit of “in your face” work!

Nice work! I’ve been using the Sigma 70-200 for a while now for sports work and I have to say, its a really great lens. I’m probably going to get the 120-300mm in the new year, the reviews for that have been great. The days of poor quality Sigma lenses are long gone… Here’s an example of one the shots I got a while back up in Parnell Park:

Gortan60 just wondering – can you give a bit more info about back-button focusing? I’d not heard of it before… looked it up and I’m still not sure what the benefits are over regular servo/continuous focus (which is what I’d use)

Nice one alright! I personally love shots that capture players off the ground, think it adds a bit of ‘ooomph’. Wouldn’t mind the 120-300 myself but for now I’m happy with the 70-200, very sharp when used right.

It was this link that got me going on back button focusing…http://www.everythingd7000.co.uk/autofocus-guide/..” onclick=”window.open(this.href);return false;.

Basically, you hold in the back button with your thumb, constantly while tracking a subject, and only fire when you want to grab some frames. The reaction time is quicker, and for some people like me having to have a button permanently pressed works better than trying to gauge a halfway focus when using shutter for focusing. I have arthritis in both hands, in my finger joints and the back button style is perfect for me.

    Hope that helps.

So you can use the AF lock button instead of holding a half-press on the shutter button, is it? That seems like the opposite of AF lock to me… I think I need to just go try it out

yep, that’s basically it…give it a go, though I must stress that it does that a while to get used to it!…It’s the only way I shoot sports now, and my keepers rate is almost 100%

I just came across this how-to for Sports Shooting on [Ken Rockwell’s site|http://www.kenrockwell.com/tech/sports.htm]… presumably not a new article, but lots of interesting info that’s new to me.

I’ve always just used Single Point Focusing… I wasn’t aware of DYNAMIC Mode or Focus Priority… so will be defintely be trying those out next time

thanks Mark. It took me quite a while to finally nail down the D7000 and Sigma 70-200 f2.8 combo to settings that give me good images. The D7000 has a bad rep for weird focusing problems but I have found that it’s more of a case of getting used to the wide range of settings that can affect sports shooting.. Must make a week list of the settings that work well for me and post here for anyone who is having probs.

Where do you shoot your soccer stuff? Around the Cork area?

Good stuff, family involvement in sport gets a lot of us hooked on shooting the games as well! I do our own local leagues in west Waterford, League of Ireland, some GAA and whenever Munster play in Musgrave Park in Cork. My wife and half my family are away for a week from Thursday this week so I’ve a whole weekend of soccer shooting planned without any other distractions!!….Can’t wait! Will end up doing about six or seven games over the two days.

Excellent. I’ve been to a few if the Munster games here in Cork. It seems that they done mind you bringing a camera. Would you say that’s the case?

    Cheers
