Softness in Images
-
GfoxParticipant
Hey all
Looking for some advice.. Recently I have noticed a softness in some of my images, even with correct exposure/aperture/shutter speed..
I am using a Canon 30D body with 70-200 28 L and 17-40 F4 L…Anyone have any suggestions?

This sort of thing is difficult to diagnose without seeing some examples, complete with the EXIF metadata showing the exposure settings. How about posting a few images along with 100% crops of unsharpened examples.
Are you using a tripod? If so are you turning off image stabilization? (Yes, the 70-200 is supposed to have tripod-sensing IS, but my experience shows that it’s still better to turn it off.) I assume you’re using auto focus – are you focusing in the right spot, or is the camera focusing on the wrong thing and your subject is outside of the depth of field? If you’re hand-holding your camera are you obeying the rule of thumb that your shutter speed should be no slower than 1/focal length (doesn’t take into account IS – you can get away with up to three stops of a slower shutter speed with the 70-200 with IS on). Are you holding your camera properly? Your stance has a big impact in image stability while hand-holding. If using a tripod, are you holding onto the camera or tripod while it’s exposing? That can introduce camera shake. Are you using a cable release?
If all of those factors above aren’t a problem, then you may have a problem with the autofocus system in your camera (I assume since the problem occurs with both lenses that it’s not the lens). Have you knocked the camera about lately? Have you borrowed someone else’s body and tried taking shots with your lenses? Is the problem still occurring when you do?
As you can see there are a lot of potential causes to your problem!
