Software?!?!

Hello folk, new to the site,got a Nikon D90, for 18month, i have been using the likes of pisca3 but would love to get a more “professional” type package, i have a laptop, what is a good package that won’t cost the earth… added complication is that i will probably upgrade laptop shortly and have will have the whole Laptop Vrs Apple dilemma… i would spend €200 on a package… thats the price of Apeture3… but of course the MacBook could be €500 more than an equivalent laptop… in short, what software would you recommend either PC or Apple! thanks, Brian
Adobe Lightroom is brilliant, and not too expensive. You can download a free 30 day full trial from Adobe website.

Photoshop Elements would be my ‘budget’ choice. approx €50-60. You may even get one on eBay much cheaper 2nd hand – as they come with many PC’s.
Awesome capabilities as this crazy price.
You may never touch some of the other features CS5 has to offer…but its a good cheap intro the Abode software range. All the interfaces are pretty similar.

Many of the photo magazines use Elements for their tutorials – and of course YouTube and Abobe.com have bucket loads.
There is a Mac version also – so you can try before you buy for 30 days.

i use elements and then the odd 3rd party addon, such as AKVIS packages with it, i find them very helpful
I’m a pc man and always have been. I dont enjoy working on MAC’s but thats my personal opinion.
Lightroom is brilliant i dunno how i worked without it before. So much more helpful.
I used to use Corel PaintShop Photo Pro X3

til i got used to using photoshop and i’ve never gone back since. But if your looking at something to start out with its a nice user friendly and simple program. All have free trials.

Oh also if you choose Photoshop you can try out this site Pixel2Life for some nice editing ideas and creative inspiration. Helped me out alot at the start and even if you dont use what they show you you might learn some other little bits and pieces
Wow, haven´t noticed that Corel has already released X3. I used X2 and really liked it, have to try this one.
I’ve it installed but rarely use it, its more something i tinker with then use seriously. just like to keep up with it. it is, in my opinion anyway, a nice stepping stone to photoshop for someone just starting out as alot of it is easier to use and access for beginners but now that i know more about photoshop i wont go back :)
Well I started using Photoshop about 5 years ago as my mother who is a graphic designer had it installed, the Corel X2 just had some features that I liked, but of course even if I install the X3 I will still keep using CS5.
The Apple gear is very hard to resist and a very popular choice among creative professionals for many reasons. Although more expensive, it is unlikely you would have too many regrets. Having said that I am very biased as I run a Mac only business and plan to keep it that way :-)
Regarding software, I would urge you towards sticking with Adobe products like Elements or Lightroom. Aperture has a few nice features but Apple have been terribly slow to fix bugs and support new cameras which has made a lot of loyal Aperture fans (including me) move over to Lightroom as their main image importer/organiser
apples approach to software is to use it to sell hardware
when things reach a certain ammount of saturation they tend to wander off and find another application to sell more hardware
i get the impression thats whats happening with apreture, also with final cut pro
although because apple dont produce a roadmap like most corporate software companies do, no body really knows

It certainly seems that way Steve. There’s a certain lack of constancy from Apple regarding their Apple Pro apps. It’s a pity because they were showing some real innovation on that front for a while.
They had a real headstart on non-destructive raw editing with Aperture 1.0 but they totally blew that one in recent years.
the thing most people dont realise they dont actually do inovation they buy it
for example the Ipod they bought
dvd studio pro they bought
etc etcapple’s thing is design and marketing

I use Corel Paintshop pro X2. I have tried the X3 version but some functions were hanging in Windows 7 64 bit, so I went back to X2.
