SOLD Canon EF 2 x II Extender
-
johnnymcParticipant
The Canon EF 2X II Extender is a teleconverter. These high-performance accessories multiply the effective focal length of the attached lens by 2x. For example, a 200mm lens with the Extender 2x, increases to 400mm. Extenders are only compatible with selected EF lenses, including the EF 70-200mm f/2.8L USM, EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM, EF 70-200mm f/4L, EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L USM, EF 400mm f/4 DO IS USM and fixed length L-series lenses of 135mm or higher.
This converter has never been used. I’m a Wedding and Portrait photographer who for some unknown reason purchased this about three years ago. Its in immaculate condition…..and I mean immaculate. Not a scratch/scuff mark anywhere on it. Comes with the original Canon carrycase.
I thought I might use it with my 70/200 lense for sports photography…but as mentioned above, didn’t use it once.
Priced to sell at €250. No offers below asking price…it really is as new. Priced €399 in Conns.

John
FlipsakeParticipantjohnnymcParticipantHi flipsake….yes it will.
When using the extender with your lense, your maximum aperture will be F8.

John
brendancullenParticipantYes – it will work – but it decreases/narrows your lens’ aperture setting by 2 full stops.
your f/4 will become an f/8 – and in my humble opinion – rendering it pretty useless in all but good sunlight.

FlipsakeParticipantSound Brendan and John, just have the 70-200 a few weeks and weather conditions hav’nt been the best for
taking a few shots of the lads rugby matches.Thought maybe the extra bit of reach might come in handy
(lens +extender).johnnymcParticipantAs mentioned before Flipsake, I haven’t used this extender.
I’m a Wedding and Portrait Photographer and purchased it thinking that I might pick up some sports work and use it then. I never did. I can’t give you personal feedback as to how it performs in sports photography.
As I mentioned, your maximum aperture is halved (from F4 to F8) when using it as it double’s your zoom. You can also get a x1.4 extender which means that you multiply your maximum aperture by 1.4. In your case F4 x 1.4 and your new maximum aperture is F5.6.
You have to weigh up the benefits to see if the extra zoom is worth the trade off in aperture. Personally when I purchased it, I though a x1.4 extender was a negligible increase in zoom.
I wouldn’t agree with Brendan’s view that it’s rendered useless in all but direct sunlight. Two local sports photographers here in Galway use it with your lens. I also attend the Aviva (Landsdowns RD) regularly whre you will see them used a lot.
There are three variables which are important when taking images, aperture, shutter speed and ISO. Probably the most important factor for you would be what camera you are using and it’s ability to perform at higher ISO’s if required.
Hope the above makes some sense to you.

John
LWheelerParticipantJust as a word of warning – from what I understand unless you are using a Canon Eos 1 series camera – AF with the lens and extender combination mentioned will NOT work….
johnnymcParticipantHi Lawrence,
That’s new to me. I use the 5D’s (mark 1 and 2), and previously had the 20 and 30d’s. No problem at all with autofocusing and the extender. The sports Togs in Galway use the 40D with the teleconverters….no problems.
Where did you hear it only works with the 1 series?
Regards,
John
LWheelerParticipantHi John,
There is no issue with using the extender and AF – however the person who asked the question is using a lens with an F4 aperture. As this extender when added will increase that to F8 – it is my understanding that AF will not work unless it is on an Eos 1 series body. I have had a quick look and the following website also mentions the use of extenders with the lens mentioned:
http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/Canon-EF-70-200mm-f-4.0-L-USM-Lens-Review.aspx” onclick=”window.open(this.href);return false;
also mentioned in the following link:
http://www.eos-network.com/index.php/eos-network-photography-blog/tags/aperture/” onclick=”window.open(this.href);return false;
Is it possible that yourself and the people you are mentioning have the 2x extender coupled to a F2.8 version of the lens (which would make the max aperture F5.6)….
johnnymcParticipantHi Lawrence,
Thanks for the links and they are enlightening.
Yes I use the F2.8LIS version as you mentioned. I’m after attaching the extender to my camera (used the 5D mark1) along with the 70/200 and manually used an aperture of F11 and indeed f16. The camera didn’t have any problem auto focusing. It’s weird the way the link says that “As the Canon EF 70-200mm f/4.0 L USM Lens is compatible with the Canon Extender EF 1.4x II and the Canon Extender EF 2x II, these are popular accessories for this lens.”
Quote:It contradicts that sentence though with what follows.
I’ve tried contacting my friend that I know uses it with a 40D and the F4 70/200 but no joy getting hold of him.
Maybe another sports Tog might enlighten us.
Thanks again for the links,
John
LWheelerParticipantHi John,
From what I understand it is based upon the max aperture of either the lens or lens + extender combination. I believe that AF is actually performed at the max aperture not the aperture that you have the camera set to. Any Canon camera (apart from the Eos 1 series) requires that the lens or lens + extender combination is at F5.6 or above otherwise the AF is unable to function.
I have found another forum where someone has described this a bit better than I could:
