Hi folks –
So, I have these two images. One of them has sold quite well for me, and the other I’ve never put up for sale. They’re both taken on the same morning about two years ago. Both have been post-processed deliberately, but differently.Which would you choose?
Cheers,
PeternolongerParticipantFor me, the first one definitely has more of a “Hey, look at this” effect. The second one doesn’t really have the same punch.
joe_elwayParticipantThe first. There’s more water action going on and the red colour in the sky has retained more detail.
Brian_CParticipantAgain the first one for me. Thou, if the second had been processed same as the first I think it would be a better picture, mainly due to the red sky.
andy mcinroyParticipantThe horizon is straighter in the second.
But seriously, both would be strong images to my eyes and I would have trouble choosing between them. The second is perhaps a little simpler so I would tend towards this one.
Andy
StevenHannaMemberThink I prefer the 2nd as there’s a little more colour coming through off the sun.
Steven
earthairfireParticipantI prefer the second one, and I find the sun in the sky an interesting detail, and a useful focal point.
I also prefer them both in a landscape crop – chop the pic in half and see what you think. ?ersonally, I think it makes the composition far stronger (not too sure I’m a big fan of the current foreground perspective)
Hope it helps!

RobertoMemberAliParticipantI go for the first, mainly because the rocks are the point of interest. In the second shot my eye is instantly drawn to he sunset (really takes away from the foreground).
BanjoParticipantpetercoxMemberThanks for all the responses. The first one is the one that I currently have for sale. The second one keeps catching my eye when I’m browsing through my library, and I think it could be the stronger image if the wave detail was better (which is why I selected the first one originally). I prefer the perspective of it and the fact that you see the full rock pool in the foreground.
I do think that the first image works better compositionally though – the relationship of the redness in the sky to the rocks to the diagonal of the pool is a bit more pleasing than the second one.
As for cropping it, the image is really about the contrast between the still water in the foreground and the rough seas crashing over the rocks (for me, anyway). It loses that if you cut out the foreground.
Always interesting to hear different points of view – thanks =)
Cheers,
PeterPippateeMemberSecond one gets my vote Peter…the sun on the horizon and the complete rock-pool make the image stand out…
GrahamBParticipantTough choice but if it was my money and I was framing the print,
I would have to go with the second one. The first one is excellent and
shows of the spray much better but for me the second is a much more complete image.Excellent shots though
ExpresbroParticipantI’d be another vote for the second too. They are quite similar..but there’s something sits easier with me about the second one…maybe the complete foreground rock pool as Pippatee commented.
Both really nice shots though, no reason why the second one wouldn’t sell too imo.

8)DJHParticipantThe first – there is more “Power” in the sea, to me, the second shot is a nice poto taken on a claim day … but the first has more charactor to it …
