Incredible work Ken, truely inspirational. Had a look at your site there. Fingers crossed i’ll make it to the exhibition in Kells before the end of the month.
…and I’ve got no excuse not to make it. I only live around the corner. I’ll be there tomorrow with bells on!

richiehatchMemberBeautiful shots Cian… wonderful colours and the subjects speak for themselves… did you do some ‘painting with light’ (with flash or otherwise) on the 1st, 3rd and 4th…? Its a technique I played around with and think it works beautifully if done right… If thats how you have done it then ye have your technique nailed.. Lovely images..!

Can you provide more info on what you are referring to as ‘side-lighting’ for some of these?Ross
Hi Ross,
As mentioned in my into post, I treat most of my photos as you would a portrait rather than a landscape, therefore the landscape becomes a backdrop which I try to make as atmospheric as I can then concentrate on lighting the subject, mostly old stones :) Most portrait photographers aim for as soft a light as possible but I aim for as hard a light as possible to bring out the texture and structure of the stones. An off camera flash is just perfect for this, I use a Nikon SB600 in wireless ‘commander mode’ most of the time but also in manual mode, triggered by myself during long exposures. I used to use flashlights much more but I find the flash is easier to control with a combination of aperture settings and flash power settings and a lot of experimentaion.
Thanks to all the rest who have commented, would be great if some of you could pop in to the exhibition, the Heritage Centre gets busy during lunch so it can be a bit awkward leaning over people who are eating, better to go off peak!
ValentiaMemberBrilliant work Cian. I will definitely take a trip over to the exhibition too.
