Some of my pictures of Dublin (Pic heavy)
-
James7Participant
Hello Photo Ireland people :sick
Well due to the recession I have had to sell up both of my cameras. Really sad day for me but I am hoping to pick up a cheap old film camera shortly to keep me going. Want to give film a try! These are the last few pictures I took on my Canon G12. They won’t be to everyone’s taste but I am very happy the way some of them turned out. I hope you like them too.
Any comments or advice welcome as always

James7ParticipantMarkKeymasterHey James,
Could you resize them ? Most of the first set are huge and I can’t see them properly (they also take a while to download as they’re large). I zoomed out in my browser (can’t zoom out enough :) :) ) and can kinda see some. So I know there are some real nice ones there but would be great if they were say 800px at the widest and maybe 600px high for the longer ones.
You’ll get more comments that way too :D
Thanks
np72ParticipantMy laptop froze the first 3 times I tried to open, and the only way I could open it was to click on the link to Mark’s reply, and can only see the photo’s in the second post and 10 and 11 without freezing again
James7ParticipantSorry Nigel and Mark. It’s kinda my first proper post here. I spent ages trying to get those pictures posted haha
I think the best way is for you to click on the slideshow Flickr link that I have put up there now.
Best i can do right now until I figure out how to resize them like you told me to Mark.
5faytheParticipantHi James,
Looks like some good photos could be there but they were taking an age to download and
I had my first computer freeze in years and had to reboot. :)Resizing is not that difficult and well worth doing.
There is some good free software available like IrfanView which make the job pretty simple. If you need any help just ask.
Cheers,
John.
James7ParticipantHi John
Thanks very much for the compliment mate! Sorry for messing up your computer.I followed Mark’s tip and resized them to 500 X 375 on Flickr. They now all appear correctly on my screen compared to before when I had a load that wouldn’t show up.
If they dont show up correctly on other people’s computers then I will resize them smaller again ;)
5faytheParticipantHi James,
You have been busy. :)
They show fine now and take only a second or two to download.
In fact the site can show images up to 800 pixels wide.I’ll have alook through the photos later on.
There is a lot of them. :roll:Cheers,
John.
James7ParticipantCheers John. I know yeah there are quite a few haha Let me know what you think anyways. Appreciate the comments.
np72ParticipantSome interesting shots there. It’s been a few years since I was in around Grand Canal Dock, I see the old CIE ship is still there, from what I remember that used to run from Galway city to the Aran Islands when it was in service. The last time I was in around the dock,4 or 5 years ago, I seem to remember there was a dry dock, that would have been somewhere behind you as you were taking shot 9 (the one with the Grand Canal Dock sign in it). I must go in around there again one of these days.
James7ParticipantThanks Nigel. Glad you find them interesting. I had no idea that was a CIE ship and nice to know what it was used for when in service.
Not too sure what a dry dock means. But I took photos 9, 10 and 11 behind where the caravan was. It’s some waste land with loads of rubbish around. I spotted people over there doing something dodgy when I was on the other side of the Liffey and decided to venture over when they left as it looked like an interesting spot with the Graffiti. It seems to be a hang out spot where homeless people, junkies and kids hang around so I made sure no one was there when I went over. It’s very secluded. A nice spot for pictures! You should Nigel. Well worth a nose around ;)
voicuParticipantnp72ParticipantA dry dock is where a ship is basically taken into, the water drained out (with supports under the ship) if any repairs have to be done below the waterline. Did you get there from Ringsend or down along past the Ferryman bar?
With the photo of the ship, you can probably see it better from your own file, if you look on the funnel, there is a small circle towards the top, thats the CIE circular logo that was on all buses and trains years ago, its still being used on CIE Tours International buses as far as I know.
James7ParticipantI know Voicu! Just can’t wait to get my hands on another camera. Missing some opportunities to take some nice pictures :( Very happy you like some of them!! :D Numbers 1, 6 & 10 would have to be my favorites
Hi Nigel. Thanks for the info. That area seems to full of history. I got there past the Ferryman Bar. I must keep an eye out for that logo and maybe get a closer look at that ship.
np72ParticipantIf you are ever going through Ringsend, there is at least 1 way in along where the ship is, I think its possible to walk in from the canal bridge, where those apartments are, or if you happen to be in a car, if you go towards the next bridge past the Dublin Bus garage, turn left at the next lights, there used to be a diving supply shop inside the ship, so if the shop is still there, the gate to the yard should be open when the shop is, and you should be able to get some closer photos of the ship, and the dock from a different angle.
It’s a pity you had to get rid of your main cameras, do you have even a compact to keep you going for now?
