Someday, My Prints Will Come

    About three months ago,
about a dozen of the members here arranged a print swap-
so that we’d all have a nice set of prints to treasure for Christmas.

So now might be as good a time as any to put them online-
to see what we’ve learned from the experience-

I suppose there could be a number of things to talk about-
from print quality, to printers and paper, packaging and delivery,
and not least, how the prints compare to the versions reproduced online-
and how the magnification even only to A4,
produces a vastly different picture to the low resolution pictures posted here-

If anyone wants to post their prints in this thread, for ease of navigation,
    you’re most welcome-
though its understandable if you’d prefer to post in your own thread-

This is the one I sent out-
Nikon D200, Epson R1800, Epson Premium Glossy Photo Paper-

Your point has been proven Joseph – the print quality of your image puts the web version way back in quality. Great exercise too.

Here’s mine to compare but you’ve seen it before…

    Sony A100, 10-20mm, Epson R300, Epson Semi-gloss.

    Here’s to round 2…

This was mine, and also visible on the NIPA website at http://www.niphoto.co.uk/nipa_niphoto_monoprints_r3.html

My word that model is absolutely stunning, and the shot itself is perfect !

I changed printing companys about 2 months after my first print and the difference was amazing, and t wasnt a case of “get what you pay for” as the firm i use now were and still are cheaper to use. Not sure what make the machine is ? might be HP but it cost him £6500 :O

Here’s mine (my normal crop for this image isn’t a4 btw. too much space on top). Getting the sharpness just right for print vs screen display was the challenge in my eyes.

This was the one I sent, I think the prints I posted were a little better in quality than this negative scan. I was the only one of the group working in film for this project at the time and was delighted to be invited.

    Thanks for putting these up-
What I wanted to see was how the prints compared to the online versions-
and I would have been surprised if they all matched-

Starting with my own, there are differences-
I don’t know how much converting from the print profile has altered things,
but the print has a much cooler tone, particularly in the clouds.
Being able to read the small detail helps my one a bit too, I think-

Alan- on my monitor, there are some differences-
the online version is not as saturated, and is lighter- particularly in the reflections of the boat at the waterline-
The sharpness and textures in the hull, while apparent onscreen, doesn’t prepare you for the richness of the printed version-

Thanks too, for sending it out twice, after it failed to show up in a week-
The next day, both of them arrived in the post-

    Ross, another lovely print,
though the mount was unexpected- and it unfortunately arrived crumpled,
as there were no stiffeners in the envelope-

Today, when I took it out again,
I noticed the little Photo cards-
unfortunately, I ripped the cellophane trying to get them out-
Good cards though- I recognized the pictures in all of them-

The print is pretty close to the monitor-
    perhaps a little bit lighter-

Mark, really a very nice print-
Altogether it works very well, and at A4 too- I don’t necessarily agree with you about the space at the top-
Again, not an exact match on my screen, but close-

And Eddie, lovely photograph, very nice print, good paper-
and was very glad to get it-

Again, thanks to everyone who took part-

I enjoyed this exercise. My prints should have been reasonable quality
bar 2 which were accidentally printed at a notch below “best quality photo”.
I’m not sure who got those but I’m sorry – I won’t bore you with a long
    explanation of why it happened.

I don’t want to single out any particular photos – if you want critique
you all know where to post the picture – but I was very impressed with JB’s
print quality and I have a set of photos that I am very pleased to own.

EDIT : Hardly finished typing and the postman arrived. Guess what? Steve’s
photo was included in the delivery, and very nice it is too. Thanks.

This was mine, from my favourite photographic location at the
moment. Taken from the seventh floor of one of the blocks…

I posted a different version here on PI a while ago which met with mixed
reactions, but I was pleased enough with how this printed.

As regards the whole exercise, I’m with Pete in agreeing it was most enjoyable,
and I too have a fine set of prints in my collection now. Do I have a favourite?
Possibly, but it may take me some time to decide to change my mind yet again…
Thanks to all who participated. Definitely worthwhile. Roll on round two…

This was my print club offering:

The print itself turned out to be slightly darker than the web version appears on my monitor. I’m not sure if my monitor is too bright, or if Photobox print things a little darker than they should. The colours don’t quite match perfectly, especially the orange/red in the sky. The print wasn’t quite as sharp as I would have liked in the foreground area, but hopefully it was still acceptably sharp to most of you. Paper used was Photobox’s standard matt – Fujicolour Crystal Archive. I have found this to be superior to the glossy paper they use.

I have not yet had the opportunity to collect the set of prints which Andy has been kindly storing for me, so I will not comment on any individual images at the moment. However, after seeing some of the images in this thread I am looking forward to seeing the prints.

    Thanks for organising this Joseph.
